Title: May unused phone lines drive Ethernet?

Hay,
Trying to hook-up my neighbors, so we may share a connection. And I guess you know the relevance to this forum.
Tried using two unused phone lines that connect the two rooms. Although the two pairs conduct a regular line fine, Ethernet just won't budge.
Must I use CAT5 cables?

You can use phoneline, but you need special equipment on each end

do a couple of searches on Phoneline networking

If there's no hub in the arrangement (ie it's out of the back of one PC and directly into the back of another PC) the cables will need to "crossover".

That is to say that the positions of the two wires on the connection terminal to one PC need to swap with relation to the the positions of the two wires on the connection terminal on the other PC.  Like if
PC1=RED wire at position 3 and BLACK wire at position 6, then
PC2=BLACK wire at position 3 and RED wire at position 6.
(the names of the colours and the numbers have been altered to protect the innocent)

I know that sounds just wrong, wrong wrong wrong, but when I first join two PCs directly to each other it took me many hours of hand-wringing, teeth-gnashing and hair-pulling before finally someone said, "You are using a crossover cable aren't you?" and straightaway I had a network.
