Title: How to get MC to re-read tags when importing previously removed files?
Post by: nickharambee on October 11, 2009, 10:20:15 am
Hi

On one of my imports into MC something went wrong with some of the tracks, in that the bitrate was misread.  They were all given a value of 128kbps when in fact they are Apple Lossless files with varying bitrates.  The track length was also affected, with track lengths listed as being considerably greater than they should be (presumably this is linked to the bitrate misreading).  I have successfully imported the same tracks into another MC library, so I am confident that if I could re-import the tracks into MC in such a way that MC re-reads all the tags, all will be well.  I am aware that I could clear my MC library and start again, but as most of the large library is OK i would rather not do this.  When I try to re-import these files, having removed them from the library, MC imports the files very quickly using the tag info from the previous import, and thus I still have the incorrect values for bitrate and track length.  I have tried updating library from tags for the problem tracks, but this doesn't correct the error.

So, essentially I am wondering if there is a way of forcing MC to re-read the tags for tracks which have been previously removed from the MC library, without having to go down the clearing the library and re-importing everything route.

thanks

nick

Try this on 1 track to see if it works. If it does you could do more.

Click on a track that needs to be updated, then:

Right click-->Library Tools--> Update Library (from tags)

As mentioned in my original post I have tried 'Update Library from tags' already, and though it did at one point work with a few files, it won't work now.

I should add that MC reports the correct track length/bitrate when I play a track in the top display bar, so I'm not sure why it isn't displaying the correct information for some tracks in playlists/media views

Auto-Import should be able to remove old file data if also the disk files are gone. You could remove the files from the library, move the disk files to a temporary location that is outside MC's reach and run the Auto-Import feature with all cleaning options enabled. After that you can move the files back and import them as new library entries.

Anoher, a relatively easy solution would be import the files from a different basefolder so that MC would not have old data for them.

A more complex solution would be to actually remove them from the hidden deleted files database section. Here are some old threads that explain it:

Thanks Alex. Worked a treat.  Your third suggestion, removing the files from the hidden deleted files database actually seemed the simplest in my situation, and I successfully removed all files from this, and then MC did read all the tags for the previously deleted files when i ran another auto-import.

Trouble is these files, or at least the first few I tried, are still displaying the wrong track length/bitrate.  Oh well, I will start another thread about this issue...
