Title: Media Jukebox won't play my DVD's
Post by: JULIO BRACERO on July 06, 2002, 10:24:03 pm
I get an error message every time I try to play a DVD on my laptop (HP, XP Home, 128 RAM, Pentium III 850 mhz, 20 HD). It says something like this:

While setting up DVD-Video playback, it was found that
*Video cannot be shown on the computer monitor because of one of the following reasons:

a) Low video memory. Please try using lower display resolution and/or colors.
b) Another application is currently using the necessary display resources. Please ensure that no such applications are running.
c) The display adapter is incompatible with the DVD decoder. Please try to obtain a display driver update.

I have enough video memory. My laptop came with HP DVD Player (DVD Express, Mediamatics)... I'm trying to find out if this program is the default player. I've tried looking for display drivers in the Media Jukebox webpage to no avail.

Can somebody help. :-(

Can you play DVD's with the player that came with your DVD drive?

I have exactly the same problem here. A DVD that plays fine in PowerDVD XP gives the message mentioned above. I haven't tried this on the other computer here with a DVD drive, mainly because it's kind of apart at the moment. I just tried two more DVDs with the same result. Both play fine in PowerDVD XP.

Glad to see that I'm not alone with this problem!! Yes, my DVDs play fine with my bundled player. I know that Mediamatics is hardware based, meaning that it makes changes to the chipset: for instance, I can only change the DVD region 5 times and then its imprinted on the hard drive (or so their website says..).

I don't know about Power DVD. And that's very odd too, because that is the very best player there is.

Try installing a free set of DVD mpeg2 filters available here:
http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/encoding_plugin.html
Look for the link "Free DVD Filters".

John T,

I can't download the filters... something about that web page that says access (or download) is forbidden... how do those filters, or filters in general, work and how they can help MJ8?

It may have something to do with the DVD playback filters not being registered - or even installed. My computer at work plays DVDs in MJ with no trouble. I have a Radeon with ATI's DVD 7.5 player installed and it plays DVDs (surprise!:). MJ would obviously need an installed, working software DVD player to function as it doesn't come with filters.

I'll try registering Power DVD's filters tonight to see if that fixes things.

That's right, MJ doesn't need another player application but it does need the mpeg2 decoding filters that come with the players. The latest Power DVD filters don't work with MJ because they prevent other applications from using them.
Any "directshow compatible" mpeg2 filters should work with MJ.

Julio-
That's weird that you can't download from that site. It works fine for me.

No, Power DVD filters work fine with Zoom Player. ZP allows you to mix and match filters from any DVD software you may have installed and it definitely handles PowerDVD filters.
