Title: Trouble with 96kHz and Theater View
Post by: fhl on November 29, 2009, 02:29:02 pm
When I switch to Theater View, the sound breaks up and gets really distorted. This only happens when using a sample rate of 96kHz. Everything works fine in Standard View. When sample rate is set to 44.1kHz, both views work fine. What can be wrong?

No tips?

Not a tip really.
SRC can use a lot of CPU.

Open the task manager.
Run something with a sample rate set to 96.
Switch to Theater view.
Any process peaking? CPU load 100%?

also, what happens when you set the sample rate to 88,2kHz?

with the chance of saying something stupid, is it not much lighter for the system to just double the sample rate? 44,1 X 2 = 88,2. and 176,4?

CPU load lies between 5% and 60%. Haven't tried 88.2 yet, but I'll try that some day. The CPU is an AMD Athlon II X2 250, I have 4GB RAM and the computer is only used for MC.

Theater View uses 3D graphics.  Your video card has to work harder.

How are you outputting sound?  To a receiver?

I use ATI HD4200 onboard graphics(http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=3156 (http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=3156)).

The sound is output analogue(4ch) through a Echo AudioFire8 soundcard. I use a VST filter for room correction an 2-way crossover. This runs fine on a 1.4gHz PIII with 512MB ram and onbord  graphics. My new computer should be a lot more powerful, so I don't understand why I have these problems.

I just tried 88.2kHz, but it didn't help. If there is a difference, it's too small for me to tell for sure.

Try turning down the drawing quality for Theater View in Options > Theater View.

You might also update your video drivers from amd.com.

Tried that, but it didn't help. Maybe I'll just have to try a more powerful CPU. Meanwhile the solution is to control the music computer with a laptop. This way I get both SRC and Theater View.

You might try DPC Latency Checker.

It is a Windows tool that analyses the capabilities of a computer system to handle real-time data streams properly. It may help to find the cause for interruptions in real-time audio and video streams.

One last thing to do is to increase the hardware buffer size of your soundcard and the Media Center buffering size in Options > Playback > ASIO/WASAPI/etc. settings.  Switching between ASIO / WASAPI might also help.

You said "tried that" but I mentioned two things.  I'd really recommend the latest sound / video drivers.

Sorry about that, but I tried both latest drivers and lower drawing quality without any luck. Today I played around with buffer size, but the result was the same. 4ch of 32/96 can't be played with WASAPI, maybe my hardware does't support it. Also tried Direct Sound, but this only give me sound in 2 channels.
