Hello I recently installed a new Windows 7 Pro O/S and everything in MC is working fine except MC14 (latest) crashes as soon as I play a .mpeg video
.avi plays fine...
I downloaded the latest k-lite codecs which did not help.
PLEASE HELP! I have been using MC since v11 and never had this problem.

Try the CCCP codec pack. See our wiki for information on DirectShow and CCCP.

Hi thanks for the reply. I tried to follow everything and the CCCP works if I open the video file in media player classic because I see the red and blue icons in my tasktray.
However I dont think MC14 is making use of the CCCP codecs as it still crashes when I play .mpg and when I play a .avi it doesnt show the icons mentioned above.
I cant find the same screen in the wiki where it lists all the file types and allows you to select the different check boxes as it seems the screenshots in the wiki are for an older version of MC.
What setting do I need to change to utilize the CCCP codecs?
-
Check what filters you have set under Tools/Options/Filetypes.
-
I looked there but i couldnt figure out what to select... under mpeg video it has an "x" by file association and the setting below is "automatic"
if I change automatic to jriver it still plays back the same
-
If you click on Automatic, you can set it to JRiver using DirectShow filter. Then you can try another filter (on that same screen).
-
But it still crashes like before... do I need to change the settings that come up below?
-
I think so. You're using a filter that causes a problem.
-
which one of the 3 settings do i change?
-
If I forget about the .mpg file for a second - how come when I play an avi file the ffd icons dont show up in the taskbar? This makes me think MC is not using these codecs?
-
If you set AVI to JRiver using DirectShow filter, does it show the FFDShow icons then?
If not then have you installed another filter AFTER CCCP?
-
No... it will play the avi just fine (like it did before I installed the CCCP) but no icon.
Now if I open either an AVI or an MPG in the media player classic that came with CCCP in both cases I get the icons.
I have no other filters installed. (verified with CCCP-Insurgent-2007-01-01.exe)

If you right click on the playing avi ie the actual playing video you can go to directshow filters menu and this will allow you to see what filters are being used.
FFDShow may have it's icons turned off, although I'm not sure why they would show up in Media Classic.
-
Right click from where? That doesnt come up if I do it from windows explorer...
-
Within Media Center. Actually on the playing video, in playing now.
-
OK I noticed something tell me if this is an issue please.
If I go into the CCCP setup under ffdshow video decoders it shows the following:
divx
flash
generic mpeg4
h264
theora
xvid
and thats it? no avi or mpeg2? This is the latest version I just downloaded.

With CCCP installed, there are two options for playing MPEG2 video - FFDShow and "MPC - MPEG-2 Video Decoder (Gabest)". With FFDShow, you may have to go to FFDShow's settings window to enable MPEG-2 decoding. I do not know if it is enabled by default.
In MC you can choose a specific filter (or a specific set of filters) to be used for playback of a given file type. To do so, go to Tools > Options > File Types and select the file type (mpg for example), and choose "JRiver video engine (using DirectShow filters)" for Playback Method, then select filters from the comboboxes "Source filter" (for mpg files you should just leave Source filter at "Automatic") and "Other filters".
