Title: Steps for processing images on a regular basis
Post by: krosenqu on January 09, 2010, 10:00:04 pm
I'm trying to make importing and processing of images easier because I'm not the only one putting pictures on our server regularly (I'm in charge of processing all of them).

I created a smartlist so that only images not meeting my process criteria show up.

I make sure that these fields are populated:
Artist = for who took the picture
Copyright = for who owns the camera
Caption = copy the original camera created filename (this shows up as the field "title" in windows 7 file manager)
Original Title = same as Caption
Keywords = for general tagging of people, locations, holidays, ect.

I then change the [Name] field and the actual filename (using the "Move, Rename, & Copy Files" tool) to the [Date (filename friendly)] field.  This is because we have many Canon cameras.  The file names "IMG_xxxx" were not enough and not unique. We have over 20,000 pictures so there were many repeats of file names.  Now every file name is unique because no two photos were taken at exactly the same time.

Its a lot of work but the smartlist shows me exactly what images need this done.  The only problem is, I dont know what images have had what step already dont to them.   Short of having a smartlist for each step, I dont know what to do.  Any suggestions?

What do you guys do for importing and processing images?

P.S.
I then go to picasa for geo-tagging and facial tagging.
MC 15 Feature request? :D

The simplest way I have found is to put all new files in a "To Import" folder and to leave them there until they are tagged, at which point they are moved into the "My Pictures" folder.  I do the same with music; nothing gets into the Music folder without first being in the Music To Import folder.

I do this too.  Actually, I have Windows automatically import the raw pics from the camera to our camera backup server.

Then I have Media Center import the pictures from the camera (and then delete them from the camera) to the "To Import" folder on the desktop. From there, I edit, delete badies, review and then move them using the tool in Media Center to their respective folders on the server.

This is all a very long process though.
Especially when I need to import 1-2 pics.  That's a major pita process.
