Title: Song Ratings....1 - 5 only?
Post by: soylent::black on April 17, 2003, 02:53:34 pm
Any particular reason why ratings are 1-5? Is there any way to change this? My library has already been carefully rated previously with 01 - 10 ratings (from another player). Now that I switch to MediaJukebox will I have to re-rate everything? 1 - 5 doesn't really seem like enough numerals for a decent rating system.

most people would normaly say
Bob: "From 1 to 10 What do you think of her?"
however MS Media Center also has a 1-5 rating
What jukebox had 1-10?

In Musicmatch you could get into the ini file and change the ratings available to you. Hmmm. That's something I did not look for on this player...
Anyway, MM comes stock with stuff like "bad" "good" "ok" etc, and I changed mine to a 1-10 system.

My ratings, 1-5:
1 - Actively dislike this song. Listening to it is painful and unpleasant. 2 - Don't actively dislike, but don't actually like either. Wouldn't choose to put it in a playlist, but might listen to it in the context of the whole album (some songs fit in an album but don't stand alone). 3 - Minimum score for a song I would actually put in a playlist. Like the song okay. 4 - Like the song a little bit better than okay. Would actually choose to listen to it often. Always makes me happy when I hear this song. I actually go, "yeah--good song!" 5 - My most favorite of favorite songs.
Personally, 10 ratings would be too much for me.

I personally can't imagine needing a 10-scale rating system. How can one differentiate between, say, a 6 and a 7? Throw in the fact that my preferences for particular songs comes and goes at irregular intervals, and rating on such a fine scale becomes an excercise in futility. I just can't imagine thinking "This song rates a 5 out of 10", and being solid enough in that feeling that, despite any mood I may have, it never varies to a 4 or a 6. I think a smaller rating scale actually allows more flexibility in this respect. But that's me! :-X

>> How can one differentiate between, >> say, a 6 and a 7? a 7 will have blond hair
I don't really go by the rating, My PlugIn will enter a rating based on the charts however.

I cannot count beyond 3, therefore I only use 3 numbers :
1 - for standard "average" song 2 - to mark the best tracks in a particular album 3 - to mark my personal "all-time" favorites
For tracks I really don't like, I wonder everyday why they're still in my library ? ?

I have only 3 levels , but only 2 in my librairy:
1-s-h-i-t = deleted in no time
2- good or worth to go beyond a first listening
3 - 99,99 % of my many hardrives = OUTSTANDING
Listening to: 'Ride for Vengeance' from 'Once Sent From the Golden Hall' by 'Amon Amarth' on Media Center 9.0

...Because some songs grown on you only after you listen to them a few times.
...Because you have different "musical moods".
...For album completeness and continuity. You may not want to have tracks 1 - 3, but delete 4, then have tracks 5 and 6, but not 7, and oh no I didn't like 8 either, but I have 9 - 12.
Actually I don't always keep songs I dislike. If I only like one or two songs on a CD, I'll rip and encode (or download) those songs, file them separately, and forget about the rest of the songs.

That's all fine and great. But nobody's answered my original question yet.
Is there a way to change the ratings system?

No. It's 1-5 and won't change.

If I only like one or two songs on an album, I move the files to my "Cuts" category. If I like more than a few songs on the album, I tend to keep the whole album. I think of my library as "my entire music collection", not just "the music that I like to listen to".

well i say that because we have someone at work with 4 fingers.
his nickname is 9 fingers.

I think 1-5 is fine 1-3 would be fine also, not sure what i would do with 1-10
I think black books normaly go 1-5

What a good idea. I felt 1-5 was a bit limiting so I just created my own field and stopped using the built-in one, integers -1 through 6 for that extra bit of scope.

Yeah. That's what I'll have to do. Just wanted to make sure before I started re-rating 5000 songs.

I would export your DB to Excel and then place the following formula in cell Z1 (well away from the columns containing MJ data and it assumes that your rating is in column A).
=ROUND(A1/2,0)
Now click on Z1 and drag the handle down to the last row of MJ data. When you have new values for all the rows, copy and paste the new values over the old, delete column Z, and re-import the DB.
The formula will round the number up to the nearest integer. No calculus or diffy q's required!
10-27

you are a genius.
Thanks.
(but what would I expect of a fellow Steeler fan?)

Thanks Soylent...
I'm going to miss Kordell somewhat. He was good (at times) and durable as hell.

10-27
edit: you know, my idea could work if the delimiter and DB structure was known
