How do you get MC to use the Haali splitter?

I recently had to uninstall to fix a problem and consequently lost all my settings.

My avi's are now not as smooth as they were.

If you download and implement Haali, it installs both splitter and renderer. You can choose your splitters, renderers and filters in Options>Video.

Do I have to change the playback from auto to something else?

Yes, change Playback Method to "JRiver video engine (using DirectShow filters)".  Only then you will see filter selection drop-down boxes.
