Title: Memory play
Post by: Vincent Kars on March 11, 2010, 05:29:43 pm
Using MC 14.0.155 on Win7
Configured it to play from memory
Started the performance monitor
Loaded a performance by Steve Reich
This is 1 track, 288 Mb WMAL, close to 1 hour of music.

The first 9-10 minutes, there is no disk I/O
After this period, there is constant disk I/O at 90.000 B/sec  (image=system, file is the Steve Reich)
Standby memory=1650, Free=438

Is there a upper limit to the memory  playback?

It's capped at 256 MB of memory.

If this is the case, I expect disk I/O at the end, not after 10 minutes
Given the file size, 10 minutes is approximately 50 Mb

The cap is 256MB ahead of the current file position.

If I understand you correctly, the data is read in chunks of 256 Mb
So I expect a burst at the start and one when the first 256 is finished
What I see (after about 10 minutes) is a continuous stream just like when reading from the HD with memory playback disabled
The speed of the  I/O (90.000) is identical when reading 16/44 straight from the HD
