The following error pears when i try to play m4a music files. This is a new phenomenon but i can't think what may account for it.
J RIVER DIRECTSHOW unspecified error 0x80004005
This error doesnt apear when I play mp3 or flac music files. Any ideas how i can fix this?

The wiki has info on M4A playback. MC can play back with Quicktime's engine or with DirectShow filters.
Check Options/Filetypes in MC.

Thanks for your reply JimH. I installed the quicktime engine and m4a files play but via HDMI to soround speakers (is it becuase quicktime always chooses the Windows defualt sound device?). I tried to select the J River (using direct show filter) but m4a files don't play at all. Anything else I can try?

You need DirectShow filter DC-BASS source filter to handle Apple Lossless codec.
There is a link to it in the Wiki. You can also search this board for Alex B's post about DC-BASS.
