Since I bought a new harddisk yesterday, I moved 600 movies from one harddisk to another. They were all tagged with director name, country etc. I specified the new librarypath in MC 14.0.0165. The files show up, but the tags are empty ! It was a lot of work, and i hope there is a way to get the tags back. I tried updating tags from library. Didn't help.
I have the feeling I wasn't carefull enough and should have used some trick to keep my tags. But it's too late for that. Is there any hope left ?

No. They are probably not lost.
Movie tags are stored in the MC database or in sidecar files (xml files in the same directory with the movies). Restoring an old backup of the database would probably work IF the files are in the same location. If the location of the files changed (C: to D:, for example, or Video to Movies), then MC's library won't find them.
MC makes automatic backups. You can restore one from File/Library.

In addition to what Jim said:
If the old files are not anymore in the library, load your latest library backup file and fix the video files' base path with the Rename, Move, & Copy Files tool (I'll search for the instructions I once posted and add a link soon.) If you have not created library backup files manually you can find automatically created files from:
C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\J River\Media Center 14\Library Backups (XP)
or
C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 14\Library Backups (Vista and Windows 7).
Disable the the "fix broken links" setting in Auto-Import options (do this before loading the backup file and immediately after loading it check that the setting stayed disabled).
EDIT
The instructions (a quick search found six threads):

thank you guys for the clear answers. I'll try it out tomorrow. I really think it's amazing you care to elaborate your answers in depth. Now it's up to me ..
Edit Guess what, it worked ! Just as Jim said + what Alex B said.
