So, my silenced PC has bitten the dust - it's been suffering from some problems for a short while, and finally succombed. I could look to rebuilding it again but it had such a protracted original gestation I'm ambivalent about it - and besides, now that I've moved some of the library middleware to another PC and the library itself to a SAN, even the SSD array is now kind of redundant.
So I'm probably starting from scratch, and while I was considering some of the custom silent PCs from a German maker, I'm wondering if an Atom (+ Ion) is sufficient for dedicated j.River duties.
I've plenty of SSD's left over so popping one into an Ion box (as long as it takes 2.5" SATA) will not be a problem. I just want something quiet which runs j.River well, occasionally with a couple of FX in place.
Anyone doing this? If so, on what box?

Just built one myself using the following...
Asus AT3IONT -i
4gb DDR3
30gb SSD
Hauppauge 2200 (2250 in U.S., I believe) PCIe
DVD drive.

I just built the following, very very quiet and compact and not lacking speed!!!
Lian Li PC-Q07 case
Intel DH57JG miniITX mobo
Intel i3 530 cpu
Zalman CNPS7000al-cu heatsink + fan +fanmate
Enermax eco80+ 400w
DDR3 4GB ram
OCZ 60GB SSD (for OS)
Western Digital WD20EARS 2TB (for files)
LG DVD burner
Windows 7 x64 / Ubuntu Studio (dual boot)
The only thing I'll swap out is the SSD, which I think is unnecessary for a HTPC, and put in a 2.5" 640GB instead.
I thought about an atom ion mobo+cpu, but in the end the price difference for the mobo+ i3 cpu was not massive given the overal cost and I think the Atom is just a bit sluggish for certain tasks (encoding etc). I love my Atom netbook though, mainly because of the massive battery life.

The machine won't be doing any encoding - playback only.
How about the Asrock 330HT?

This is nice
