Title: Synch to folder (magical)...
Post by: grandlulu on July 31, 2010, 08:08:03 am
hi guys,

I had experiment sync function to hard drive folder, very useful to reorganize your mp3 collection.
Imagine you have your mp3s disseminated everywhere in yours hard drives & want to have all of them in a single place, easy now!
Example below to organize the new folder tree as number of stars:

Go to menu >Tools >Options >Handhled >Add device...
Name a sync as you want in >Device
Browse (create) a folder where you want (hard drive, network) >Browse
In Files & paths section, put in Audio path: [Rating] stars\[Artist]\[Date] [Album]\
Do the synch:
Select files, nevermind the method, library view (time to create one?), playlists (smartlists) and now: >Tools menu >Send to>Drives & Devices >(your synch name)
and go the bottom left to window program to >Transfer   Et voilą !

Make tests, no risks...
Exercises: copy your best-of to a flash disk, convert wma to mp3 on the fly, copy just U2 videos & mp3s...
improvements, ideas welcome...

Question: what are the differences with "Album artwork", "Cover art"?
And: what is the "database path" interest?

I try that but sync is powerful.
Pretty good

Syncing to a portable device that is actually just a folder on your hard drive is a powerful and useful feature.  A bit of a hidden or non-obvious feature, but a great one for those who find it.

I use a local folder like that to do batch conversions.  Select the conversion settings for the device, select the files, then sync to that device.

I also use that technique to populate my conversion cache folder.  Configure the local "device" to save the files in the conversion cache and to also create stacks.  Then do a bulk conversion at night to populate the conversion cache with my new files.  Then the next time I sync the iPod the sync goes nice and fast since I don't have to wait for it to convert my new FLAC files to MP3 during the sync.
