i dont know about you, i use them like the tags inside audio files. but when you depend on your library only, you can disable them in mc. its under:
option>general>importing&tagging>store tags in external........

Will this affect functionality if I delete them?

yes and no.. it depends on what functionality you talk about. the database wont run slower.. even quicker when saving video tags. but when you do an 'update library (from tags)' you are on your own for video files. the tags are in the sidecars.. so its about what you need and want.

its save though as far as i know to delete them.. just try a few if you are unsure.

Nope.  These are just like the in-file ID3 tags in your MP3 files.  They can be used to exchange metadata with other copies of MC, or with other applications.  MC writes them, but doesn't actually use them unless it imports a new file with no information and it finds the sidecar file (or you manually tell it to "Update Library from Tags").

Video file types (particularly AVI) don't support tagging in the files, so MC uses these files (called "sidecar" files) to store the metadata.  These can also be used to recover if you lose your library files in a catastophe of some kind.
