Title: unable to play any videos with MC 15.0.106
Post by: dreamer on September 08, 2010, 05:07:22 am

hello everyone,

have just installed MC on my laptop but am unable to play any videos on it...this is unusual as the last version was ok.

whenever i try and play a video the screen tells me it is downloading needed components (ffdshowinstaller) and once it trys to install this component i get a message telling me that the program was unable to initialize and my system shuts down...i have tried on numerous occasions to solve this issue, but am unable to, and am getting rather irrate with having bought another version of MC.

any help appreciated,
dreamer

Sorry for the problems.  Which windows is on your laptop?  Does your account have admin rights?  Is there a good internet connection?  I've asked our video guru to chime in on this as well.

The best bet would be to try updating FFDSHOW yourself.  The easiest bet would be to use this source for FFDSHOW: http://www.ffdshow.info/

Follow these instructions:

1. REMOVE any copy of FFDSHOW currently on your system.  Go through the full Add/Remove Programs Control Panel tool, and remove any instance of FFDSHOW in there.
2. Reboot.  DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP BECAUSE YOU ARE LAZY!
3. Download the latest build of FFDSHOW from the above link, and install it.

That is the currently active FFDSHOW project.  Another option would be to use the most recent CCCP Beta, which is available here: http://www.cccp-project.net/beta/

Official builds of CCCP are getting a bit long in the tooth, so I wouldn't use them.  Also FFDSHOW Tryouts betas seem to have been abandoned back in February.  It would be nice if we could get a real, stable home for FFDSHOW.   ::)

hello again,

i have one system on vista and one on windows 7....both are having problems.

tried uninstalling ffdshow as you suggested, then reboot, then download and install. once i started up MC and tried to play any videos the same thing happens again...the whole system crashes. i gave your program admin rights, which is something i rarely do, but it still does not work...i am beginning to wish i had used my money on realplayer or something else...BTW, my antivirus program has picked up a keylogger from MC...?? i am hoping that my security program is wrong...?

What version exactly? Did you uninstall that version? If not, does it still work correctly with your video files?

In general if any video files don't play and the program always crashes when you try, I'd suspect that the actual MC program installation is broken for some reason. If MC cannot find suitable DirectShow filters it should only produce a "playback error" message. Though, some "bad" filters have caused crashes in the past.

Regarding "keylogger", does your antivirus program provide more info? Did you download the Media Center installer from the JRiver site?

Sounds remarkably like a 'bad' version to me. Uninstall, and reinstall with the most recent installer from the top of this board.

It sure could be a corrupt application install, but it really sounds like an interfering anti-virus application to me.  What AV Software are you using?  Have you tried just disabling it and running a video just to get through whatever install MC wants to do?
