Title: White screen for video playback
Post by: The Mastermind on November 06, 2010, 11:28:47 pm
I was importing some files into MC this morning, when I had a sudden and unexpected install of FFD Show take place. I'm not sure why that happened.

Since then I get a white screen anytime I try to play back a video file in MC.

If I have my source filter and renderer set to Haali I can get a picture. However, this isn't satisfactory for me, because this is taking place on my server, where I tag and create thumbnails and Haali is not satisfactory for that. Anyway, I just want the system to work the way it should.

I have installed and uninstalled CCCP and K-Lite, as well as MC itself and have had no joy.

With a little more fiddling I think I have isolated the problem to the Video Renderer. A couple of renderers work, but the one I prefer, 'automatic', does not.

Bump.

The only two renderers that work are Haali and Legacy.

If my first post suggested that I have K-Lite or CCCP installed at the same time, I don't.

I need some help here.

Is this the same problem?

Installing CCCP often fixes problems like this.

That really sounds like it could be a problem with your video card drivers.  Since the Legacy renderer works, but other more modern ones don't, that makes me suspicious of drivers, not other software.  Also, the "white" problem makes me think it is a rendering problem, not elsewhere in the filter chain.

I'd do this:

1. Get your directshow filters back to a "known-good" state.  Remove everything, reboot, install ONLY CCCP (at least for now).
2. Set the Playback Method for ALL video file types back to fully Automatic.  No special selections of any kind.
3. Download the latest version of your GPU's drivers from the vendor (AMD, Nvidia, or Intel).
4. Remove the old drivers.
5. REBOOT.  Do not skip this because you are lazy.
6. Install the new drivers.
7. Now try again.

Does it work?  If not, does that same file work in Windows Media Player?  How about Media Player Classic?

Also, what version of Windows are you on?

Thank you gentlemen.

Glynor, you had it right. A driver upgrade solved the issue. I was hoping those working renderers would provide a clue.

Cheers.  ;D

Nice!  Glad I could help.
