Title: Just Ordered a New TV
Post by: glynor on November 10, 2010, 02:43:58 pm
I'm excited.  I just ordered (minutes ago) a new Panasonic Viera TC-P50VT25...  It'll be nice to replace the craptastic Sceptre HDTV LCD @ 60Hz.  I look forward to a judder free future at 96Hz!

We purchased the 65" version, and love it.  Enjoy!

Nice!  What, if anything, did you do to break it in?

I am going to use this primarily on a HTPC, of course, and I'm mildly concerned about burn-in (the Win7 taskbar, for example) since I've never had a Plasma before.  I'm probably planning on following the AVSForum Break-In guides, to try to avoid any issue with that, but wow...

100 hours of constant playback?  That seems a bit extreme...

We simply set the viewing mode to Standard and watched full screen all the time.  Most of what we watch is full screen HD anyway, and the few shows my wife watches that are SD were zoomed to fullscreen.  We're past 100 hours now.  Don't waste your time with the silly "break in" slides.  Just enjoy the time watching the TV.

As an aside, you'll want to disable the auto contrast adjustment (C.A.T.S. in the Picture section).

We watched a couple of HD movies from DishNetwork: Iron Man, and Alice in Wonderland in 1080p.  The image quality and color was simply superb.  What a treat.

Are you going to get the 3D glasses?

I guess the recession is over.  Good to know.

I play a fair share of First Person games, and I'm worried about HUD burn in.  I also use my HTPC for lots more than TV watching, and leaving a Firefox window up for 2-3 hours at a time is NOT an uncommon occurrence on the HDTV.

It comes with one set.

I probably won't buy any more.  I don't expect to use it much in that mode.

Well, I must admit, it won't be sitting in my Living Room (it is work's, but I get to use it a LOT).

(I still get to play games on it from time to time, and it will still be used mostly as a MC-frontend HTPC type setup, and some videoconferencing.)

Nice TV!  Welcome to the modern age!

I look forward to a judder free future at 96Hz!

Like all TV's I've seen, the specs say it supports 1,080 HDMI input signals in 24 & 60hz so judder free for NTSC and Film material ... but with display rate changing!  (I presume 50hz as well so you can get judder free PAL but who knows!).

Nice TV!  Welcome to the modern age!

I do wish it was going to be sitting in my living room, rather than the living room of our mansion/conference-center/dormitory!  But, it'll still will be lots of fun to play with, and I'm perfectly happy to head over to the seaside mansion for some evening entertainment when it isn't in use!

Of course... It'll make me REALLY want to replace the junky TV at home.

Hows the new TV working out?

Unfortunately, not here yet!   :(

I'm hoping today or tomorrow.  Going through our purchasing department adds a good week+ to any shipping time while they twiddle their thumbs and decide what to do.

Finally got it, by the way.  Very pleased so far.  It did take a little bit of tweaking to get the colors situated (wow, they crank the contrast up on the default "home standard" settings), but a combination of using the THX setting as the base and then running it through a calibrator with a digital eye and it looks beautiful now.

I think I will really like the feature that auto-adjusts the brightness/contrast of the screen depending on ambient light in the room.  I thought I would hate it and disable it, but so far it has been a subtle but valuable effect.  Nothing like the cheap "auto-contrast" feature on most LCD TVs.

The only problem now is that it makes all of the flaws in my other displays so painfully obvious...  ;)  ::)
