Hi all,
I have just tried to rip a couple of CDs using MC 15.161 connected to a library server (also running 161), yet MC crashes after the first CD is ripped. I get a windows dialog up saying that MC15 has stopped working, do I want to debug or close.
Actually the ripping procedure carries on for a while in the background I managed to complete 6 tracks before MC stopped completely

I have had this issue on two separate laptops now both running Windows 7

Could you try getting a Media Center log of the crash (Help > Logging) and email it to matt at jriver dot com?

What brand of drive is it?

This laptop has a PIONEER_DVD-RW_DVR-K17RS
Not sure about the other laptop, but the same problem exists.

Actually, yes. I use COMODO. Will disable and try again.

Well, just disabled COMODO firewall, Denfens+ and AntiVirus but no joy. MC still crashed.
I ahve been running COMODO for many years now and have never seen a problem before. As mentioned, I belive I have only seen this problem recently.
Oddly I have just noticed another problem that might shed some light, or just maybe something completely unconnected.. When I click on the "Rip CD" in the action Window, I get a message -
"Rip Disc is currently unavailable.
Please ensure that a suitable CD/DVD drive is installed on this machine. Also, make sure you are using a local library and are not in Party Mode."
I haven't notice this previously as I usually Rip disks from the automatic dialog box that I can pop up when I insert a CD. However, I can navigate to the CD in the "Driver and Devices" and start a rip from there no problem - of course MC will crash soon after though.

What has changed since it was working?
Does an older version of MC work?

I have installed many apps, including things like Visual Basic Express (along with with .net 4), Expression Encoder. I ripped a couple of CD on the 17th November with no issues (I belive this was with a version of MC that didn't officially supported ripping CDs to a remote library server, yet it worked fine).
I can try and uninstall this build and install an earlier version if required, although I don't retain any old versions.

If you can tell me what version was out around the 17/11, and where to get it, I will re-install on the server and client and see if I can get it to work.

If you use a local library where you're not connected to a Library Server, does it work?

Hey Matt - interestingly, if I disconnect from the remote library server, I can rip to the server share with no issue.
Jim, thanks for the info. I will bare it in mind for future reference. The version I was looking for would have been .155 released on the 16/11. The release that supported ripping to a remote library server was the version after (.156), released on the 18/11.
Although I was playing with ripping to a remote library at this time, I can't truly remember if the CDs ripped at this time were ripped to the remote library or simply to the server share.

Ripping on a Library Server client is not officially supported with v15.
It still shouldn't crash so we'll do some testing on our side as well.

Apologies Matt, I sometimes read things that simply aren't there (Dylexia). What I read with version .156 is that CD Burning is now supported on the library server client (not ripping).
I haven't tested with the older version yet - probably won't get around to this until the weekend.
Where there any clues from the logs why it might be crashing?

Thanks for the log. Something is going wrong merging the new tracks back to the server, but I've been unable to reproduce it.
This is sort of the opposite of what you were looking for, but a coming build will have this:
Fixed: It was possible to rip a CD while connected to Library Server by using the view header rip button, even though the Action Window would correctly report that the feature is disabled when connected to a library.
We'll circle back to the problem if it still exists when and if we tackle ripping, importing, etc. from a client with upload when necessary. I would not expect this to be a v15 change.

Many thanks for looking at this, even though the as you say, it's not quite the answer I was looking for. Looks like its back to multiple libraries until MC16.

I can't wait to see what the v16 Library Server improvements bring, now that I'm on the Library Server bandwagon.
