Title: PROBLEM SOLVED: Custom tag information disappears when moving to new machine?
Post by: epsilonjon on December 24, 2010, 11:17:58 am
Hi.

I recently got Media Center and am using it on my machine which is used exclusively as a music server. However, when I download new tracks from the internet, I usually do this on my laptop, and I also retag them on my laptop (music server has a touch-screen which is not ideal for typing lots of data). I have just done this with a bunch of albums and created some custom tags. However, when I then transfer these albums over to my music server hard-drive, all the custom tag information has vanished. I re-created the custom tags on my music server installation of Media Center, but the custom tags just appear blank when they should have data in them. Is there any way to resolve this without having to retype them all out again??

Many thanks,
Jon.

MC has an option to store the tags in the files.  Make sure it's on.  Options has a search window in the upper right.

What type of files?  Not all can be internally tagged.

The only option I can find is "Store tags in external sidecar files if the filetype does not support tagging" , and this is enabled for video files. The files I am having trouble with are audio files though, both flac and ape.

It's under File Location.  Please see the attached image.

I'm sorry.  I just re-read your post.

If you have custom tags, you also need to add them on the second PC.

The option in the image you showed me is already checked, so no problems there.

I have already added the custom tags on the 2nd PC (i.e. going Options -> Library & Folders -> Manage Library Fields -> Add new field), but then when I import my albums into Media Center, it shows all these custom tags as blank.

Maybe a typo?

Maybe you haven't added them to the view you use?

Are you using the same version of MC on both?  Which is it?

FLAC and APE should both work fine.

Not a typo. I've added the columns for the new tags in my view but they all just appear blank.

I'm using version 15.0.159 on both.

15.0.171 is on the download page.  I don't think that's it.

Take a look in the tag window.  Choose the option "Show all".

On my laptop in the tag window I have "Disc Name: Neumeister Chorales". Then I copy the album to a portable hard drive, transfer it to the 2nd PC, and I have "Disc Name:                    ". Very strange!

Did you also tick the field specific option to write file tags? Each user field can be configured to be stored only in the library or in the library and in the file tags: Tools > Options > Library & Folders > Manage Library Fields > select the field > Data > Store in file tags (when possible)

If it was not enabled, tick it, and resave the file tags -- select the files and do: right-click > Library Tools > Update Tags (from library)

That's done the trick. I didn't realise that option was there.

Many thanks for all your help  :)
