Title: prevent server from attempting to render anything?
Post by: salsbst1 on December 27, 2010, 09:04:27 am
Is there any way to prevent a MC instance from attempting to play a file?  My server doesn't have a sound card, and a dialog pops up (on the server, obviously) if it attempts to play anything.  The dialog is modal and the server locks until someone presses "OK".  The instance is only intended to run Library Server/Media Network-type things and centralize the database, so I'd like to configure it such that it would never attempt to render anything locally.  Is this possible?  If not, anybody know of a decent workaround?

TIA,
Stuart

How or why are people playing things on the server?  Could they just not do that?

I wouldn't expect a modal dialog to prevent the server from responding to subsequent requests.  Could you describe what you're seeing when it's 'hung', waiting for a click?

Thanks.

It  happens if a stray tap or two on Gizmo sets "Play at Server" instead of "Play Here"....so yes, theoretically people can stop doing that, but between my fat fingers and other family members' individual foibles, it has happened and will probably happen again.

The text in the dialog box on the server is quite long.  I'll try to copy it into a reply tonight.  Thanks, Matt.

My bad.  This does indeed happen (the dialog box), but it is not blocking playback.... I misdiagnosed.  Something else (unidentified) was causing the no-playbacky symptom.

P.S.  My family thought that it was pretty cool that I could control the music with my phone over New Year's weekend.  Gave the theater view/remote control feature a nice workout.  A few times I kind of "lost control" and had to disconnect/reconnect to the server, but Gizmo is already working quite nicely.  My playback gear isn't in the most convenient of places, so having the wifi remote control is killer.

P.P.S.  I was shocked and pleased to be able to listen to my music while driving through the Allegany tunnel over Thanksgiving.  No FM radio can do that!  And south central PA isn't exactly chock full of my favorite radio stations, anyway.

So great job, guys, thanks.
