Title: Problem: static switching from mp3 to mp4 files
Post by: drmimosa on January 06, 2011, 12:21:54 pm
Hello,

I am encountering a strange problem. I have a large number of m4a files from my former itunes collection, and often (but not always) when I switch from mp3 to mp4 I hear a very loud static noise for about 3 seconds.

I currently use Windows-7 Waspi-event style to output sound to a DAC, but I can replicate the problem with Waspi-Event style output to my computer speakers as well. It seems to happen only when bit-depth on output format is enabled, and I have encountered the problem with 16-bit (computer speakers) and 24-bit (USB-Spdif converter to DAC.)

I updated to the current build of Media Center this morning.

Any ideas for what the problem may be and how to troubleshoot this? I can send a log file or provide additional info if neccesary...

Thanks!

Our wiki has an article on "M4P and M4A".  It would be worth a read.

M4A can be played in MC two ways:
1.  Using the Quicktime engine
2.  Using a Directshow filter

In MC's options, visit Filetype to see which you're using.

On a recent windows 7 install I had forgotten about the Directshow filter installation.

Installing CCCP codec package, selecting "using directshow filter" for mp4 under Options/File Types, and checking "ffdshow Audio Decoder" under "other filters" seems to have done the trick so far.

BTW, some of the wiki images for the "m4p m4a" page are mc 12 screenshots and no longer current.

Thanks Jim, I appreciate your time and attention to this forum as always!

Happy New Year to J River...
