I don't.  I'll try to find out.

Bob reported his results in another thread:

I set mine up at home with WCN (I don't have a WPS router).
It was simple with win7 starter on my netbook. I just clicked on the wireless icon in the system tray then right clicked on my primary wireless connection, did properties and selected to write the configuration to a usb drive from the connection tab. Moved the usb key from the win7 box to the Id. Flipped the switch on the back of the Id to the wcn position, powered on the Id, after around 20 seconds the usb key light lit up, flashed a few times and 20 seconds or so later went off. At that point the Id was rebooting. I removed the USB key, flipped the switch back to the wifi position and after another minute the wifi light on the front was blinking and it was showing in my MC. The whole process took about 2 minutes. I'm using WPA2 and a linksys WRT54GL.

I just hooked an Id up to the multi-room speaker system that the previous owner of the house installed about 15 years ago.  I can now select music from my server by using an Android (Samsung Galaxy Tab shown in picture), start it playing, then turn up the volume on the speakers in any room.  Pretty nice.

While I'm waiting for mine to arrive downunder, can anyone with an ID check if this works?
Thanks

Thanks Jim. Followed the instructions and got my running in about 10 minutes using the WPS method.

Very nice that Last.fm scrobbling is supported right from the get go.

I'm unable to get the JRiver Id working and hoping you can help.  I believe I successfully connected Id to my wireless network using WPS.  This is because the Netgear WNDR3700v1 Router Manager confirmed new device was added during WPS and also displays new device/MAC address under wireless attached devices.  Unfortunately the Id then never shows up in Playing Now (MC 15.0.172).  Similarly Id does not show as an available "Play To" device in Win7 Windows Media Player.  Any suggestions?

Make sure the switch on the back is set to the left as you face the rear.  Power it off and back on.

Wait several minutes for the Id to show up in MC.

Make sure Library Server and DLNA are both set to on in the options for Media Network.

If that doesn't work, power down the entire network, and power back up starting at the street side, working your way back.

This may also be useful:

Still not working.  The switch was in correct position and Library Server and DLNA were already on.  Also tried powering down and up as you suggested.  Since my other renderers display in Playing Now when on, I'm wondering if I might have a defective Id unit.

It's possible, but try powering everything on your network down and gradually back up.

Try the WPS pairing again.

I spent part of the weekend getting two Id's wired into my home system.  I had to make a couple of trips to get parts I needed, but it's now working as follows:

1.  JRiver Id #1, now renamed House, is feeding an amp in the lower level.  This amp is wired to speakers in most of the rooms in my house, as described above.  In these rooms, you can just turn the volume up if you want to hear what's playing to House.

2.  JRiver Id #2, now known as Bedroom, feeds a $29 pair of Logitech speakers and Woofer in the bedroom.

Both of these can be controlled by any of three Androids, using Gizmo.

The result is very good.  Command and control.

Id still not showing up in "Playing Now."  I WPS paired and powered up from street several times to no avail.  Should I return Id so you can check out unit?

Please send me an e-mail with your details.  I'm jimh at jriver.  We will swap it, but it doesn't seem likely that the device is defective since it shows up on your network, if I understand what you've said.  It just doesn't show up in MC.

Do you see it in Explorer?

It could be a firewall or permissions issue.

Here's another thing to try.  If you can find the IP address from your router, try connecting to it from IE.  The Id runs a web server.  You should see a page that lets you change the name and update firmware.

Hi Jim - it would appear that the ID does not support Volume Leveling (which makes using Play to ID as a Radio tough)?  Is this correct or have I got something stuffed up?
Thanks

Hey all,

Great work on the Id to the JRiver team! I just received it a couple days ago. Now I can enjoy my digital music library on my stereo :)

So, just for the other users who are trying to find the best setup, I thought I report mine:
- JRiver Id connected to the Aux input of my stereo
- Netgear Wireless router with WPS. I used the WPS setup and it worked like a charm
- Netgear ReadyNAS with DLNA streaming server
- Android phone with "2Player Network Music Player" app as controller

finding a good controller app was the biggest problem, I tried several (Andromote, skifa, plugplayer, ...) they all either didn't find the Id, or only found it sometimes, or just didn't work at all.

I have one question though: When I'm playing a bunch of tracks from a playlist I get pauses (ca. 15 seconds) between the tracks. Any idea what this could be?

@Nathan, the dlna controller I'm using has a volume control and that works. So I think the ID does support volume leveling (but then again I don't really know how dlna works, so maybe what I just said didn't make much sense :) )

cheers,

omar

If you have a computer running Media Center in your setup, you might try Gizmo, JRiver's Android application.  It's a great way to control the Id, in my opinion:

I saw Gizmo too, but as I don't have any Windows installations at home, that was not an option for me. Forgot to point that out :)

I just received my Id a few days a go. Thanks for a snappy delivery!

So I have generated a network setup on a flashdrive (I can see a folder "SMRTNTKY",setupSNK.exe, and autorun.inf)

I generated this setup from my laptop which is always Wifi connected (WEP).

But the Id never shows up in the "Dynamic DHCP Clients List" on my D-Link DI 524 router.

I've followed the instructions int the wiki exactly as written.

Edit: The  left LED was on for a while after reboot, but now it's flashing. I can't see a specific pattern to the flashes. No luck.

Is that a windows 7 laptop?
Do you have a led on the flash drive?
If you turn off the Id to start, put in the flash drive, make sure the switch is in the WCN position and turn on the Id, after 30 seconds or so the light on the flash drive should light up and perhaps do some blinking (depending on your flash drive). After a few minutes you should be able to remove the flash drive, power the ID off, move the switch back to the wifi position and power the Id up.

Several times I forgot to put the switch back into the wifi position later.

Is that a windows 7 laptop?
No, XP. The machine does generate files on the drive (as written above).

Do you have a led on the flash drive?
Yes, and the LED was flashing when I power cycled the unit (ON/off button i've also tried power cord disconnect)

(i) If you turn off the Id to start
(ii) put in the flash drive
(iii) make sure the switch is in the WCN position
(iv) and turn on the Id
(iv) after 30 seconds or so the light on the flash drive should light up and perhaps do some blinking (depending on your flash drive).
(v) After a few minutes you should be able to remove the flash drive
(vi) power the ID off
(vii) move the switch back to the wifi position
(viii) and power the Id up.

Several times I forgot to put the switch back into the wifi position later.

Check on all these, and the ID is neither registering in mc nor on the router.

Some more info, files generated by XP on the flash drive:

Yes,
Only the \SMRTNKY\WSETTINGS.txt is used by the ID.

Is there something unusual about the usb key? Is partitioned in a non-standard way or perhaps it's not fat formatted?
If there is other stuff on there you may try moving that stuff to your computer and reformatting the key with windows before regenerating the config.
Is the router broadcasting it's SSID? I don't THINK that's necessary but I've seen references to trouble with that and other devices....

Do you have any way to borrow a Win7 laptop, put it on your wireless network, and then use it as the source for the wireless configuration?

Noting unusual. It's a Corsair Flash Vouager. I tried both FAT and Fat32.

I've also tried another XP SP2 computer (FAT 32).

Yes can do tomorrow.

The two XP laptops are work PCs, maybe that's screwing up things? VPN, maybe? I also tried to uninstall the wireless access application (Thinkvantage access) on one of them just to see if wireless null config (or whatever it's called) influenced things.

On your later hardware versions i suggest you add one or two status leds. With one led you could let blink rate indicate status when the switch is in WCN pos. At least then we would have been able to see if the Id had read and understood the config.

Ok, I'll try that tomorrow.

Also, you can look at the settings in the WSETTINGS.txt file to see if they look ok.

Apparently, my XP laptops don't generate a valid wep access code, but my Win7 work pc did.

I.e. in the .txt file, the wep access code in the other files was scrambled, whereas in the Win7 version the code was correct.

I am now able to see the ID's web page. But the ID is not showing in MC.

MC with library server started (and now all DLNA features enabled) runs on my WHS box.

XP doesn't ask you for a code unless you select manual configuration. The XP auto config is, obviously, broken.

Using Media Center 15.0.173, I've now successfully streamed MP3, 16 and 24 bit WMA Lossless, 24 bit FLAC, and 24 Bit WAV files at bitrates up to 8467 kb/s and sample rates up to 192KHz.

Also streamed a few AAC-LC files to Id using Windows 7 Windows Media Player and "Play To."

Great product and very nicely priced!

This what I think I have been looking for only I need a LAN not WLAN version as my AV gear is buried in an 45RU rack and the Wireless network works crap where I am.

I have been struggling with what I have incorrectly called a AV server where what I really need to compliment what I am trying to achieve is a DNLA renderer! What is also important for my application is my 1.5Tb media drive be connected to the "DNLA Renderer" so as to be accessible for media management. This HDD would also live in the the rack.

SO I am finally making some head way now my quest is to find a a DNLA Renderer that:

1. Will connect via a LAN network ideally with a static IP
2. Allow a 1.5TB USB media HDD to be connected and accessed as a mappable drive on the network
3. Ideally support the capablities of MC in what it is capable of doing ie video and music ( that said in my case I would probably be happy with just good quality audio. Analog, optical or SPDID I don't care I can handle all formats.

Anyone know of a device like this? Any plans Jim of a LAN based version anytime soon?

If I can sort this out then purchasing MC is a no brainer.

Thanks and regards,

Fleetz

Media on your USB hard drive must be served by a DLNA Server.  Either one on the drive or software on the PC that hosts the drive.  In the latter case, MC can do that.

Your Renderer may access it directly or the Renderer may be controllable by a DLNA Controller.  Not all Renderers are.  Some must "pull" the content themselves.

Reading the DLNA article on the wiki again may help.  The fastest way to learn is to try it.  MC can provide all three functions of DLNA.

The ID isn't controlled with a remote, in fact all you can do is turn it on/off wth the switch on the front, you control MC and tell it to send music to the ID.

The ID just appears as a zone in MC.

So depending on your setup, your wife needs to be able to select the ID zone and then play her music.

If you have MC running and that zone selected then you could do this via Theater view from a  remote.

Hope this helps

Hi Richard,

Indeed you have helped.

I thought that a ID may be IR controllable via a Microsoft USB compatitble media centre remote control like the one in the top RH corner of this page.

Maybe that is only for the PC that MC is running on and for MC control only.

Fleetz

I see the ID on my server in the playing now view.

However, when I try playing to the device, I'm getting a dialog "There was a problem controlling the selected dlna device..."

This happens either when I play from Gizmo or directly on the server.

I have selected "DLNA Controller" under options\mediaNetwork.

Mp3, are the conversion options the same as the library client options?

Thanks Jim for your patience on this one.

Still need a little assistance if you don't mind. What I am wanting clarification on and more to the point how I would like to use the ID in my situation.

I would like to connect my USB media drive to ID obviously to pull media off and play via ID. I also would like to be able to see the media drive and have access to the drive over the network so I can do my media management (rip, add, delete etc etc)

I don't want to have a dedicated PC just to serve the media drive and am hoping that ID will do that job. I hope that this description better clarifies what I am trying to understand about the ID functionality in my application.

So to summarize

Again thanks for you patience on this one.

Regards,

Powering on and off achieves nothing.

Mp3, are the conversion options the same as the library client options?

mp3 will play fine without conversion.
In MC, you need the DLNA server turned on and the DLNA controller, this assumes that the source of the music and the controller are on the same PC.

If you still have trouble, try deleting the server profile in media options then readd it using the generic DLNA template.

I would like to connect my USB media drive to ID obviously to pull media off and play via ID. I also would like to be able to see the media drive and have access to the drive over the network so I can do my media management (rip, add, delete etc etc)
If the Id and the NAS drive are on the same network, MC will let you play from the NAS to the Id.
Quote

I don't want to have a dedicated PC just to serve the media drive and am hoping that ID will do that job. I hope that this description better clarifies what I am trying to understand about the ID functionality in my application.

So to summarize

> My laptop to have MC15 no media drive connected directly.
> ID to have USB media drive connected
The drive won't be connect directly to the Id.  It will use the network for the connection.
Quote

> MC15 to be able to see the USB media drive connected to ID on the network and be able play out as well as do all MC15 media management.

MC will import the media from it, so you can manage it from MC.

I managed to get the id play a few minutes. The dlna server MC runs on whs with a local library. The file paths are UNC (\\server\etc.)

I'm using 15.0.171

Try 15.0.174 from the top of the MC15 board.

Try paths that are local.

"...paths that are local."

Hm. Is that really a limitation? I won't be able to use the id if the files must be local.

Additional info: After those few minute of play, the ID dropped out of playing now and did not show up again. I could not navigate to it in the browser even if it was powered up.

Comment: A second dialog pops up after the "there was a..." dialog. I suspect this dialog (modal) can block mc if it ends up behind mc somehow. I've seen this a few times today.

Is the Id far from the access point?  The dropout sounds like a connection problem.

Try using the stand to put the Id in a vertical position.

Jim,

I need a couple more ID's but really would prefer them to we wired.

Is this likely to happen?  If so I can wait for them, if not then I'll just have to order two of the current ones I guess.

Thanks

A small MC/ID request please.

It would be VERY handy to be able to identify the ip address of the ID box from within MC.

When the ID zone appears under playing now, could the properties or maybe even just mouse hover display the IP address please?

This will make it eassier to identify the ID then connect to it to change its name.

Some routers don't make it easy to find this information, and mine is one of those, so hence the request.

Thanks
Richard

You need to make the Id easier to find. If I hadn't already known about I would have never found it. You need an Accessories page that has the Id and the remote control on it. You also need a sticky at the top of the MC 16 forum.

Songs played to my ID are getting scrobbled twice. One scrobble is instantly logged (like songs played to Gizmo), the other only gets logged if I listen to at least half the song.

The ID itself is working great. I have it hooked up to a stereo powering some outdoor speakers. It's very satisfying being able to control the music on my back patio through Gizmo.
Title: JRiver Id support for Wavelength Audio DAC
Post by: aneilshirke on May 08, 2011, 10:07:12 pm
First time poster, so pardon any mistakes.

I'm happy with JRiver playback so far; it beats iTunes any day.  I have been using a DAC from Wavelength Audio called the Brick that uses a tube to produce a warm sound from digital sources.  Pretty awesome.  It plugs into my PC with a USB and bypasses the on-board DAC.

I see the ID has a USB port.  I can't tell from the wiki what it does.

Will it output a signal that a USB-based DAC like the Brick will read, even if it is in a different room?

Thanks,
Aneil

Have you had a chance to look at the double-scrobbling issue with the ID?

Is it a configuration problem on my part, or a bug?

One more try on the ID/Last.fm issue.

All the tracks that I play through my JRiver ID get scrobbled twice in Last.fm. One scrobble happens as soon as the track starts playing, the second occurs once I listen to 50% of the song.

Can anyone replicate this issue? I enjoy using the ID (it's hooked up to outdoor speakers on my patio) but removing the scrobble duplicates is a real pain.

Scrobbling from the Id should only trigger when the Id (at a specific IP address) requests a different file or requests the same file after at least five minutes.

Does this only happen with  long songs (i.e. more than five minutes)?

Thanks.

The problem is easily reproducible. I first thought that two MC instances would be needed to reproduce it: Library Server and an MC client that would send tracks to a DLNA renderer (when both MC instances are set to scrobble), but apparently the problem can occur when only a single MC instance plays from a local library to a DLNA renderer. When playback is started the track appears at last.fm immediately as already played and a duplicate track is listed as "Listening Now".

Should volume leveling be working with the JRiver ID? I've tried turning it on, but the adjustment info is greyed out and it does not appear to affect volume levels.

Would turning on audio conversion help? Is is possible to only configure audio conversion so it only occurs for the ID and other DLNA sources?

Thanks for any help.

You need to turn on "always convert" then you can set volume leveling.

Thanks, I figured that might be the case.

I stated messing around with the conversion cache options on my work machine.

I went to Tools > Options > Media Network > Client Options > Audio Conversion and turned on Always convert audio and selected MP3 High Bandwidth.

Next I went to Tools > Options > File Location and went to Conversion Cache. I selected MP3 high bandwidth, checked Run conversion in background, and then clicked Build Conversion cache in background now...

Is this all I need? It only converted a smattering of FLAC and Ape files I had laying around. The vast majority of my library (192-320 bit rate mp3s) were left unconverted. Will these files be volume leveled?

And here is what appears when I try to set up Volume Leveling on the JRiver ID. The image shows playback stopped but it shows the same message even when playing.

Any thoughts? Should I be able to view the volume leveling info on the ID?

It's not there, it's under add or configure DNLA Servers, Audio Conversion (set to convert always) and Audio Advanced (volume leveling).

You were configuring volume leveling for MC as a CLIENT.

I'm having two minor problems with the J River ID.  I'm using the Kinsky Desktop as the controller (I find the simple interface very appealing).  My two problems are the pause button doesn't pause, instead it stops the track.  And second, shuffle doesn't seem to work at all.  Now in all likelihood the problem is with the Linn/Kinsky software, but is there any chance that there is some weird DLNA glitch on the ID that could be contributing?

Thanks

Not sure what's going on with the shuffle.
If you want to use pause though, you'll have to set conversion to high bitrate MP3 instead of headerless L16.

Sorry, I'm not sure what this means.  Are the files themselves incorrect? They are all high bit rate MP3s, or at least the ones I ripped recently with FreeRIP.  Or is there some way to change the settings on the ID itself?

Pausing is also broken in the "Play To" of Windows Media Player as well as Kinsky Desktop.  It does work in the J River Media player, but I was really hoping that any DLNA controller would work correctly.

Thanks

If your files are all high bitrate mp3's you could just turn audio conversion off. The pause works fine with mp3's.

ID friendly name doesn't propogate.

I just got my first ID. Installed and working great! I plan on getting another one right away. One small problem though, I used the web interface on the ID to set a friendly name. It saves and shows up again on the ID after power cycle but in MC (16.0.128) on my two PCs, and on my Android Gizmo app (16.0.111) the new friendly name doesn't show up, the ID still shows as the default "J River ID". Isn't the friendly name supposed to propogate to the controller so if I have more that one ID on the network I can tell which is which?

I assume you stopped and restarted MC after the name change as well? I've done this at home and it worked for me. Are your IDs on DHCP or fixed addresses? If they are DHCP it might make it easier if you give them fixed leases on your DHCP server.

I can no longer play to my ID device from MC16.

I have removed all my DLNA servers and added just JRiver ID (also tried generic DLNA) with the same result.

When I try to play an audio file (Mp3 or ape) I get "waiting" in the ststus bar then sometimes an error saying MC can't control the DLNA device and to check my settings.

If I use the UPnP developer tools I can play an mp3 file to the ID fine so I know the ID is OK.

That's correct, any DLNA devices that MC controls/pushes media to use the top profile in the GUI, not ideal if you have different devices you want to push your media to (or at least in my humble opinion).

Further to this....

I cleared Playing Now for the ID and closed MC and MC Server.  Restarted MC and waited for the ID to show up under playihg now.

When I click on the ID the status at the top already says "Waiting" and the green progress bar keeps looping around.

Hmmm....

I have got the ID working again... yay!

For some unknown reason the DLNA Server option was not enabled any more only DLNA contoller. After enabling that and rebooting the PC and the ID they are now talking.

Not sure when that disabled as it was all wokring a few weeks ago and I didn't change it, but there you go.

Now my next issue, the volume levels seem a bit too low.  I'm running my ID into a rotel RMB-1066 (http://www.rotel.com/UK/products/ProductDetails.htm?Id=6&Tab=2&Pic=1) which is 60W RMS per channel, but I'm not getting anywhere near that at 100% volume set in MC.

The DSP settings don't seem to have any effect on the ID playback so I can't force the output up using volume levelling, so any ideas?

Thanks
Richard
