Title: Can't Play or Rip CD's

I cann't play CD's in digital mode either with my Yamaha 20-10-40 burner or the Panasonic 8X DVD drives.
Analog works

When I attempt to rip CD's, I get the following error messages:

Open drive failed  Parameter is out of range

Read track failed
Drive E is not open

Upgrade to 8.0.388 if you want to retain DVD playback (not available here, do a search for it on the web...there's a German site that has it)...or upgrade to Media Center (9.0.143).

Upgrade to 8.0.396 (latest - available here) if you can stand to lose the DVD playback.

Hit the Adaptec site, DL and install latest ASPI (4.7.1.2).

Thanks for the reply, but I am sorry this doesn't work.  The problem is not only with Media Jukebox.  I cannot rip from Microsoft Media player 9 or any other ripping software.  They will not recognize my CD drives.  None of the programs will digitally extract files.  This is a new problem.  This computer has worked with this same hardware for months.


If this is any help, the cdinfo.exe program cannot get any information from the drives.

Did you ever have WMP9 beta installed? Can you remember approximately when and what was installed at the time the drives stopped working normally? You may have to bite the bullet and reinstall...or better yet...dump W98 and pick up W2k or XP (you've got enough machine for it). Your sys info says 8.0.370. You've tried newer builds?

I installed one of the earliest WMP 9 versions.  Not sure if it was a beta.  I also checked my laptop which I installed WMP 9 on and it has exactly the same problem.  

I tried to uninstall WMP 9 on my desktop, but it simply converts to 7.1.  I can't see any way to uninstall it on my laptop.  It does not show up on the install/uninstall menu in Control Panel.  Is there a way to uninstall it?

I agree.  Some problems only seem to be solved with a reinstall.

Try installing the release version of WMP9.

I have reinstalled the latest WMP 9 from Microsoft update site.  Didn't help at all.
In fact, in WMP 9 I cannot configure my CD drives from the options menu.  The box flashes on the screen and immediately disappears.

Still can't rip from any program.  It seems that the ripping programs cannot "see" the drives.

The same problem exists on my laptop. and on my wife's desktop
