Title: MJ 8 freezes
Post by: mtmueller on June 09, 2002, 09:39:58 am
I used to use MJ7, and never had a problem ripping mp3s.

I installed MJ8, and have had nothing but problems.

First, it would not play CDs if I had set to Digital. This is nonsense. Worked with MJ7, works with Creative Play, works with RealPlayer, not sure why MJ8 won't play nicely. Upgraded DVD firmware, seems to have smoothed some problems.

Now when I try to rip a CD, I will get one or two songs into it, and then MJ8 appears to freeze up. Cursor even becomes "jerky", as if my entire 1GHz CPU and 512MB RAM is working this thing.

Creative PlayCenter also rips songs at same bitrate in half the time.

What's up with MJ8? I LOVED MJ7, but now am really questioning the wisgom of the upgrade. I really like some of the new features and tree functions, but if I cannot get this thing to rip CDs, what's the point?

Anyone have the clue-bug on this, or recommendations for fixes? It almost looks like the MP3 Encoder is donkeyed up.

It isn't.  It will work.

Please copy and paste your system info from MJ/Help.

If you don't have 8.0.293, please download and install it.  Make sure you have installed the full version (9MB).  After that you can use the update.

Then do MJ/Help/Check for updates.

During encoding it is normal for the machine to be very sluggish.  Encoding requires full attention of the machine or you can get artifacts.

Encoding speed may differ depending on the encoder.  Some take more time but produce better quality.

Just to narrow down where the problem exists, try ripping to uncompressed wave format and see if it works ok.
