Title: Upgrade, Upgrade, Upgrade, ............
Post by: The Big Labinski on February 19, 2011, 05:20:45 am
The times between the upgrades are getting shorter and shorter :-\
I bought 11,12,13,14,15 and now I´m waiting for 22,5.
What is the reason for the short new releases and therfore the next pruchase?
Will there be a special discount for poeple which one have still spent a lot of money into MC???

The price is currently $16.98.  If that seems too much, you can choose not to buy.

I started at version 9. It has been 11 months since V15 was released. Of course you can wait up to 30 days before upgrading which does make the next version seem to come earlier  ;). I've paid more for VST plugins than for all my versions of MC combined. I no longer need the VST plugins, though, since MC keeps improving and adding features I want. I don't mind the almost annual upgrades.

... I don't mind the almost annual upgrades.

Me neither. One of the things I like most about MC is that it is always moving forward.

So So, MC17 is now as Beta avaliable. Another payment in a very short time for UPGRADING.
Still there were no big changes between 15 and 16 - maybe JRiver got a new management HIHI

MC is one of the few things in my life that I feel I get more than I pay for.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on the point of view, ugrading isn't mandatory.

With Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office I always skip one release, so I stay with the same version for about 4 years. With JRiver Media Center I am always eager to jump to the next upgrade. One of the fascinating experiences about this product is to see and follow how it develops step by step, release after release and very often be part of the whole process. So there is no compulsion here. Some users here in this forum still hang around with version 10,11,12,13,14,15.

As JimH remarked, nobody tells you to upgrade every time. I haven't upgraded my car for the last 12 years. ;D And we don't buy a new pc or printer every other week, just beccause a new fancier model was launched.

Every time a new version comes out there's a thread like this one. They generally start with "I've been supporting JRiver since x date". As if they think they're still paying for their first version on a subscription basis. Seriously, it's $17 - $19 every 9 months for THE. BEST. software of its kind. I can't see that that's an amount worth complaining about. I really can't.

Your purchase of 11 paid for the development of 12. Your purchase of 12 paid for development of 13 and so on.

FYI

V14 Launched approx June '09
V15 launched approx March '10 (9 months)
V16 launched approx Jan 11 (10 months)
V17 launched October 11 (9 months)

The time between upgrades seems fairly stable to me and (from memory) each version has had an upgrade discount. What more "special discount" do you a) want? and b) get from other companies that you feel you deserve from JRiver?

As others have said, if you don't want to upgrade you don't have to but please don't complain about that fact to the rest of us that actually appreciate the work that Jim, Matt, Yaobing et al put in to making this the best media player out there.

These guys earn their coin and then some.

As Peter Griffin would say - "This grinds my gears".

Many thanks for all your reaction here - they show that I’m somehow not incorrect?

I like Media Center since many years, but - now a but should come - no I don’t!

I will switch back to 14 or 15. Both of these releases are fulfilling my needs more than 16 or 17 except the data base speed.

What I would like to have is a software managing all my sound files, really a lot with very different file types.

e.g. 14 and 15 is able to play AC3 in the right way very easily - and I was not able to get 16 or 17 to play them - even with questions here in the board.

The only advantage for me in 16 or 17 is the DLNA server.

My setup:
For TV - Dreambox 8000
For pictures - Picasa
For DVD - Playstation 3
For media playing - Playstation 3 (works perfect with Media Center)
For sound - Denon AVP-A1HDA and POA-A1HD (my sweets)
11 high end speakers

Is it possible to get and reactivate old license keys for 14 or 15?

Or is it possible having more support on my problem to play AC3 files?

At the end I like your software and job here!!!!

Last comment: I would appreciate it to load images directly into this board.

Very last comment: My native language is German so please apologize if I used some bad words or phrases which is not my intention - and we are here in the "Other Cheap Thrills" board section.

Very very last comment: less is sometimes more!
