Title: Use MC to maintain a backup of my audio files
Post by: neFAST on February 20, 2011, 10:20:31 am
Hi folks, the title is pretty self explanatory.
I have an external usb drive I plug one time a week and I would like to have my audio collection synced to that drive (in case my main hard drive crashes).
Is there a way to achieve this with MC?

Probably not the best tool for the job.  Use one of the many (free) backup programs available.

Syncback would be a good option for this.  Don't forget to backup your library and cover art.

I love Syncback SE.  That application is worth its weight in unobtanium.

However, MC could handle this task just fine itself - for music especially - via the Handheld system.  Simply create a Handheld that syncs to the folder location where you want your music backed up, set any necessary options, select either All Audio, or make a Smart Playlist that lists everything you want to back up and choose it, and then sync to the external disk or whatever you'll be using to store the backup.

More difficult to schedule, but if you intend to initiate the backup manually anyway, it could be an easy way to go.

I use Syncback too. I've been using the free version for a long time. I'm pretty sure it's enough to setup a strict backup of your files on an external drive.

I've temporarily switched to the SE version (30-day trial) to setup up more complex synchronization operations. It has a nice profile setup UI (and other features I have no use). But I think I could do the same with the free version.

I use robocopy. Command line utility, comes with Windows.

Just in case of your interest, I use SyncToy-2.0 after trying some others, and I'm pretty happy with it...

I swear by Allway Sync. It has features that many other backup software don't have, and it's free until you really start to use it a lot (like syncing multi terabytes of data).
