First off to use wasapi you need to be running either windows vista or windows 7. Assuming this is the case,
the option to select wasapi as the output format is under Tools > Options > Audio Output > Output mode.

The best output mode for windows xp in my opinion is ASIO. If a device is already available for selection under 'output mode settings' once you select ASIO as the output mode this means your sound card has a built in asio driver. Otherwise you will need to download and install asio4all http://www.asio4all.com/ (http://www.asio4all.com/)

Does that apply if using SPDIF to an Kenwood hifi 5.1 channel?

I read all I could understand and put my system from direct sound to Kernal streaming but when I went to play an AVI movie the system crashed.

I have set it back to Direct sound and all is well.

I was only trying to see if the sound was any better.

Thank you
