Title: Will Gizmo run on a Nook Color?
Post by: nhb007 on April 25, 2011, 07:11:47 pm
Hello All,
I'd like to get a Nook Color eReader primarily for reading and also to use it as a remote control for my music library using Media Center 15.   Does anyone know if this is possible without rooting it and voiding my warranty?  I don't see Gizmo in the Nook Apps store yet.  Is it due to emerge as a Nook App?
Regards,
Noel

It works and looks great on mine but I rooted mine and installed Cyanogen (which rocks! btw) within minutes of receiving it.  Its also very easy to restore it to stock so I am not overly concerned about warranty issues.

A friend just bought the Nook Color. He loaded the full Android software on an SD Card. If the SD Card is inserted, the Nook will boot to it. If it isn't inserted, the Nook will book with its stock Barnes & Noble software.

He followed the instructions found here:  http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=864 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=864)

I also rooted mine and with Cyanogen and use Gizmo daily.

I don't suppose it will work on an un-rooted Nook Color.  I know the new update includes an app store, but it's not the full Android Market.

It's totally worth rooting the Nook Color.  It's a great little Android tablet for $250.

Maybe is it possible to install the apk manually: http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Gizmo (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Gizmo) (bottom of the page)....

So far I am pleased with the battery life on my nook.
Its waaay better than my phone.  I just used it on a 4 hour flight, left if on overnight with wifi on and this morning after 24 hours I was still at 44%.
The market is pretty good - there are some apps that aren't compatible and won't show up.  I've side loaded these and sometimes they work fine and sometimes they don't recognize the tablet'd higher resolution so they display as if they were on a phone.

Any chance of Gizmo being put on the Nook store?  No way to install without rooting the Nook.

No that does not work.  Only apps that are on the official B&N nook store can be loaded w/o rooting the device.  If it were mine, that would not be a problem but no way am I rooting the wife's.

If anyone at JRiver is interested in getting Gizmo on the Nook:

NOOK Developer is a program that enables content providers and the developer community to deliver new and innovative reading experiences using Barnes & Noble's open eReading platform. For more information, go to bn.com/NOOKdeveloper

Good news/bad news on the Nook front:

Good news is that that it looks like (from a non-developer standpoint) getting existing apps to run on the Nook just require some minor config level changes (no code level changes) that are minor and easy to do.

Bad news is that B&N seems even more closed that Apple when it comes to their store (as if that were even possible).  It seems that instead of letting anyone develop and submit an app for acceptance, they aren't even interested in working with you unless you have a track record of SELLING (not giving your app away for free) apps to an existing audience.

Is there ANY interest from JRiver on looking in to getting Gizmo on the Nook devices?

In my opinion, the reason both Amazon and Barnes & Noble may keep their devices a little restricted is that they sell these devices for less than cost, in the hopes that they will increase their market share for future digital sales.
