Title: Tagging over network
Post by: sskings on June 24, 2011, 11:06:25 am
Discovered JRiver a couple weeks ago and love it.  (Had been using MM for about a year.)  Congrats on a great package.

Would like to be able to do the following and am unable.  Would be grateful for any advice.

Here's the situation:
Currently have JRiver MC running on Machine #1 (a desktop) and ethernet connection via router to receiver.  Great sound quality sending FLAC files to the receiver (Denon 2112) !!  Love it.  Music library and files are on Machine #1.

Have also installed JR MC on a laptop (machine #2) which is connected to the network wirelessly and have succesfully used laptop to tell #1 to send music to receiver.....very cool.

Here's the question:
Is it possible to use machine #2 to edit tags, etc of files on machine #1?  Right now it looks like I'm unable to write to the music files on machine #1 from machine #2.  MC has these options grayed out on machine #2.....  Are there permissions I need to set to do this?

Thanks in advance.
Steve

Welcome to Interact.

The short answer is 'Yes'.  You need to use Library Server.

I can confirm, this exact sort of setup works great.

I have three main machines I use at home (or had, I smashed my laptop (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=64395.msg431795#msg431795)): the main Server machine in the basement, a HTPC in the living room, and a laptop.

I regularly used the laptop, and still use the HTPC, to do tag editing and whatnot.

Just be aware that some things that don't work properly at this time. Any changes you make to library fields or playlists from the client machine through library server won't be saved to the server.

Edit: I stand corrected, you can add new playlists, but you need to perform a manual sync before the changes are saved.

Good to see this thread. The link contains an official statement what is not covered in library server at this time. I agree, that things work not properly at this time. Most inconsistent is that I am allowed to change view settings and also all options - even though some of them only could apply to server settings (because they are linked to the current library running, e.g. Theater view). Library server usage would become much more consistent if invalid commands would be set to inactive.

Matt, are view customizations and theater view settings planned to be added to library server syncs? - I'd love to see that...
