Title: Import Track Numbers from iTunes
Post by: miketaylor on June 29, 2011, 10:31:10 pm
Just imported my whole library from iTunes to MC.  Many of the iTunes track numbers seem ignored and MC filled that tag with the year instead.  It's too many albums to change them all manually.  Has anybody seen this before?  Is there a way to fix that?

Could you email a sample file where the tags were read incorrectly to matt at jriver dot com?

Thanks.

If you have iTunes automatically organizing your files, it should be easy to fix this en masse using the Fill Properties from Filename tool.

This is assuming that Matt doesn't figure it out and fix the problem.

Thanks for the sample file.

It has no tags (ID3v1 or ID3v2).  Tags are the values like the artist, album, track #, etc. embedded in the file.

It's normal for no metadata to appear for a file in Media Center if the file has no tags.

You might be able to use Library Tools > Fill Properties from Filename to fill in some information.

Or if you have the metadata in some other program, you might be able to get that program to write tags.

Thanks Matt and Glynor.  I'm going to try to go as far as I can with Fill Properties From FileName since many of the tracks have the track number as the first 2 characters of the file name.

So a sample file name would be ...\Billy Bragg & Wilco\Mermaid Avenue\15 The Unwelcome Guest (LP Version).mp3

Then, in Fill Properties..., I set the Directories naming convention to this:  [Artist]\[Album]

And the Filename naming convention to this:  [Track#] [Name].

Click OK and expect that Track # tag to be poplulated with the value "15".

Is that the correct procedure?  I must have some detail wrong because it changes the Name tag to the name sans track number prefix, but does not populate the Track # tag.

There is a space between Track and #:

 [Track #]

Very good.  Thanks very much MrC.

This solves my immediate roadblock.  I'm converting to MC mostly because I need better audio playback features.  But the more I work with MC, the more I like the file management tools too.  This worked very well on the test batch and is now chunking through the full library:  "Saving tag changes (8723 remaining).

Now I'll start thinking about the non-iTunes libraries where I don't have the track numbers in the file name!

Thanks again all.

You're welcome, and Welcome!

I think you'll find it is a terrific piece of software.
