J River doesn't seem to be reading my tags of my wav files, making them unassigned. Auto import of my wav files works fine. it's only just started doing it. it was working previously. i changed directory (after full uninstall) where J river was installed, and updated library, all existing stuff is tagged, only new imports?? i'm using 16.0.123

Also should mention, i've formatted my hard drive with the WAV files on it, as exFAT, from NTFS.
is there a way to delete my library from scratch, but keeping J river settings? i'll try and import files from scratch to see if it fixes it. still find it odd though that the cover art and file import works, but is not reading tags which do exist?

Start by reading this:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/WAV_%26_AIFF_Tagging

IF the tags are in the files, you can use MC's Library Tools/Update Library from Tags.  Select a few and right click to begin.

Try a few before you do very many.

Ok. found the problem. The tags are fine when the same files are copied to a disk drive formatted as NTSF. but wont read the tags on a HDD formatted as exFAT. These are the same files copied to both drives. seems media centre wont read tags from an exFAT formatted drive, but other media players do see the tags. I tried another exFAT disk drive with WAV files, same issue. This possible to fix? or stuck with NTFS? Thanks for your help.

I'm sticking with NTFS, exFAT has too many quirks.

ok, problem is with version 16.0.123 not reading WAV file tags after restarting computer. i've reverted back to 16.0.121 and tried to break it, and 16.0.121 seems to be aok. everytime J river auto updates to new version, issue arises. so i've disabled auto update.

There have been no changes in WAV tagging between 16.0.121 and 16.0.123.

Could you post step-by-step instructions to reproduce the problem?

Thanks.

I've installed J River 16.0.121, no problems. I restore library from back-up. j river updates to 16.0.123, all is fine tags still there, i restart computer, now all newly imported WAV albums suddenly get made unassigned when auto importing. i right click , update library from tags, no go. album artwork is fine. i full uninstall, then install 16.0.121. auto import of same new files are fine and all files after fine.

thought i'd mention, been using J River for over 2 years, never had this problem.

Please read this and the page it links to carefully.

I'm guessing that your tags are not stored in the files, but you can try the update.

If it fails, you may be able to use your old install to update the files from the MC library tags, and then re-import.  Be careful that you don't make the problem worse.  Try a few before you do very many.

tags are stored in the files (i use dbpoweramp) i've been tagging it this way for years.
i just updated to 16.01.123. it is doing it agian, i have to revert back to previous version.
it is ONLY with new fresh files that have not previously been added to library. all other 'old' files previous imported before 16.10.123 update are fine. just NEW freshly added WAV files after update. the new imported WAVs that are unassigned in latest j river, are fine when i go back to 16.01.121. and any fresh files imported are showing with tags. there does seem to be a bug. it's not random, i can replicate it everytime.

It's like the issue is the tag reading of fresh imported WAVs before adding to it's main library.

How about making one wav file available for someone else to test.  The smallest one would be best.  I'm happy to test to spare JRiver the cycles.  PM with the file location if you want to move forward.

just updated to 16.0.125 same problem. adding a new WAV with tags, becomes unassigned. revert back to old version, add file, tags ok.

no, just using dppoweramp.
i convert FLAC to WAV, or cd to wav. been doing this with same version of dbpower for years. nothing has changed

Flac files are fine with tags in 16.01.125. I just tried it. it's only WAV files. Just to make sure you know, the wav files do have tags written in them. 16.01.121 can read them. I don't tag in media centre, i do that in dbpoweramp, then import into JR.

I took a quick look at the end of the wav file you sent, and it shows some other comment junk before the ID3 tag block:

But, once I updated the file with tag info using MC16 (latest), the block that started with JUNK is now gone, and the ID3 tag is put into its proper place.  You can see this in the comparison of the files.  The first column shows the offset into the file where that JUNK block was in the original, the second shows the original file's data block, and the third column shows the ID3 block.
Code: [Select]
2b2cbd 112  J    151 i
2b2cbe 125  U    144 d
2b2cbf 116  N     63 3
2b2cc0 113  K     40
2b2cc1 242  M-"    0 ^@
2b2cc2   0  ^@    20 ^P
2b2cc6 116  N    104 D
2b2cc7 106  F     63 3

So it appears that the tagging format being used by the original WAV tagger did not write them where MC is expecting them, instead placing its own data before the actual ID3 tag used by MCs wav/aiff tagging support.  So MC doesn't find a valid ID3v2 tag block.

After MC writes the data to the file, it is subsequently imported as expected.

I did a full uninstall of MC16 in a parallels virtual machine, and then installed MC 16.0.121.  Importing the original file you sent does show the WAV tags in MC16.0.121.  Then I deleted the file from MC entirely, and updated to the Latest and imported the file.  It does not import tags.  Something is different since MC16.0.121.

Perhaps the devs can comment further if necessary.

you are brilliant. awesome, i'm not going crazy :)
No, but you might consider switching to APE or FLAC, where tag standards are more reliable.

Hi, switching to FLAC is not an option for me, for own reasons, and format compatibility with other software and devices. The beauty of J River is that it had support for WAV tags, and has had for years with no problem. have over 3000 albums all in WAV...

JimH is correct, I am not brilliant. :-)

It appears to have broken in 16.0.122, perhaps with this change?

Code: [Select]
1. Changed: Added handling of DTS-in-WAV files with a .wav extension so that they always get decoded instead of playing as noise (automatic decoding via LAV Audio hopefully coming soon).

That is what I am thinking.  However, with the only tagged wav file I have, I could not reproduce the problem.

Is there a way of letting me have access of the problem file?

I think I got it.  It was the change in 122 that caused it.

Nice!  Mr. Blaine78 will be pleased.  I have a 2Mb test file if you need.

It was our fault.  Sorry for the trouble and thanks for your patience.

No problem. Just glad we have this interactive support with developers who help and listen, especially being the minority wav user

Great news! WAV tags are now being read in J River in 16.01.128... happy happy!

Hi,
I've ripped most of my collection to WAV using MC14 and all has been good.  To do this I log in as administrator on a XP SP3 OS.  I can play files as normal under various usernames without a problem.  I also transfer all files to an off-line music server running Windows 7 for audiophile playback, and never a problem.
I now have MC16.01.128 and all previously ripped WAV files are fine using both XP and Win7.  HOWEVER, newly ripped WAV files using MC16.01.128 cause problems.  They all appear OK in the library under user Admin, but under other users and on my Win7 music server, the library shows all new album tracks under one album named unassigned.  The folders and files look correct in windows explorer Artist\Album\Artist - name.
The tags are scrambled for all new files.  Track names appear as artist - name (as they are saved in the folder), artist, album, genre and date fields are all empty. Filename, duration and bitrate fields are correct.
I've tried reinstalls of software, with no success.  My problem seems similar to Blaine78 posted above.

Almost the same problem may be a little different
Installed new MC 16 V not update because the procedure seemed to be a little complicated,
on the same harddrive and all tags could be read accurately, and werde the same as in V 15
I only youse WAV Files which I retagged mostly in the way artist title of the Cd as for ex. Adele 19 instead of 19 only
Bought a SSD to make the PC faster and installed MC 16 V here and now the retagged Adele 19 is read as 19
I saved the library version on the old harddrive and loaded it on the SSD which didnot help
I have activated the option in plug ins WAVE and  AIFF plugins of course , I use V.16.01.149

Can anone help this I dont want to retag a second time

Does the "tag dump" aka "detailed format info" in Action Window > Tag actually show the correct file tags?
