I have my primary installation of MC16 on my OSX box running in a VMWare virtual machine. Playing back DVD's there results in horribly interlaced video, and I don't see anyway to add or turn on de-interlacing. Am I missing something or is there no way with RO Standard to have deinterlacing in the mix?
-
Bump after long weekend: Still looking for a way to use Red October and have it do deinterlacing.
-
You could use RO Standard + additional filters, add your ffdshow decoder of choice, and enable deinterlacing?

You could use RO Standard + additional filters, add your ffdshow decoder of choice, and enable deinterlacing?
This is exactly right.
1. Switch to Red October with Additional Filters.
2. Configure the File Type you need to modify to use Playback Method: J River video engine (DirectShow)
3. Leave Source and Video Renderer set to Automatic
4. Add ffdshow Video Decoder as an Other Filter
5. Click the configure button and choose ffdshow Video Decoder from the pop-up.
6. Configure ffdshow as you'd like. The Red October settings are saved as profiles in ffdshow, so you can use them as a basis for your modifications if you'd like.
7. Save your new profile in ffdshow as the default. Alternatively, you can go to Options -> Startup -> Startup Actions -> Disable DirectShow filters' tray icons and set FFDShow to NO (then you'll get the normal ffdshow tray icon and can pick whatever profile you want on the fly).

Maybe I am missing something, but there does not appear to be a way to add additional filters to type DVD Video (ifo, vob).
Under General Video Settings:
DirectShow selection method: Advanced - Red October with additional filters
Default video renderer: Automatic
Then under Decoders, Renderers, & More:
DVD Video (ifo,vob)
Playback Method: JRiver video engine (using DirectShow filters)
Auto Decoders: Automatic
Video Decoders: Automatic
Video Renderer: Automatic
There is no 'Other filters' section
The choices for Video Decoder are: Automatic, Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder, MPC - MPEG-2 Video Decoder (Gabest). The MPC choice with deinterlace set to auto doesn't do it either.
Edit - tried manually setting a deinterlace option under MPC and it didn't do it either.
-
Dumb question, but do you have ffdshow 32-bit installed?

Yes, ffdshow 32-bit is installed. Still can't see how to use it for VOB/IFO playback.
-
I don't know, that's really strange.
You're looking here, right?:
Maybe try restarting your computer?

Thanks for the screen shot - I did not initially have ffdshow installed when I started looking at this which is why it wasn't there when I made my notes earlier. I do see the option for it there now. Will play around and post back when I have it working for anyone else trying to accomplish the same thing.
Thanks.

I have chosen FFDShow as the Video Decoder and configured FFDShow for DVD Playback (assigned a decoder and checked the 'enable DVD playback button), but MC16 still doesn't use it. Any other thoughts?

I think libavcodec is broken for DVD playback. You might try switching to libmpeg2.
If that doesn't work, you could also enable to raw filter and do deinterlacing after the MS decoder.
-
Tried both libmpeg2 and libavcodec. Even with Raw set to 'All Supported' it still isn't putting FFDShow in the loop

Are you using the newest version of ffdshow? Found here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/SVN%20builds%20by%20clsid/generic%20builds/
Earlier builds may be blacklisted.
-
Yes, running that version. Downloaded it earlier today.
-
Sorry.... I didn't read carefully enough and didn't realize that you were looking for DVD playback (should have read the subject line, at least). ::)
I know Matt has had a LOT of issues with ffdshow handling DVD playback, and has never gotten it to work reliably, so ffdshow might be blacklisted in Red October (or "not whitelisted" which is actually how it works), which means you won't be able to use it currently.
I do also know this has been a recently requested addition, though, so it may be coming (or may have already happened). We'd really need Matt to comment. Bryanhoop would know better than I.
DVDs are not my thing. I have no use for spinning plastic discs, and when I rip them, I rip them to MKVs or MP4s, so I don't have much/any experience in this area.
-
I have chosen FFDShow as the Video Decoder and configured FFDShow for DVD Playback (assigned a decoder and checked the 'enable DVD playback button), but MC16 still doesn't use it. Any other thoughts?
This is the same issue that I have. I want to use FFDshow to set video levels for DVD playback. The funny thing is that in the windows merit system it works fine. I would also like to see FFDshow reenabled in Red October.

Some VIDEO TS files look awful. This is a crop of a particularly bad one:
Any motion in the movie is just horrible.
Any ideas on improvement? Would LAVCUVID help for VIDEO_TS files? (currently iGPU Intel HD3000)

This is an old thread, so I'm not sure the original issue still applies.
On a Windows 7 machine, Red October Standard will use the Microsoft MPEG decoder with EVR. This should provide basic hardware deinterlacing and look good.

My apologies. I read the thread and seemed pertinent to my problem. The last two posts before mine didn't seem to suggest the issue was resolved. Happy to start another thread if that is appropriate.

Does h/w deinterlacing work on sandybridge HD3000 GPU? I get the same result with ROSTD and ROHQ. Something isn't right. It doesn't look good - as shown in the screencap. I have tried with both Use hardware acceleration if possible option checked and unchecked. Any chance of adding a s/w deinterlace in the filter graph eg. ffdshow yadif as the h/w deinterlace clearly isn't working.
SBR
-
It seems that EVR does h/w deinterlacing via DXVA and this implementation is particularly flaky on SandyBridge. I'll have to roll back a few drivers to see if any at all have some form of DXVA.

I'm puzzled by this DVD.
The RO (both HQ and standard) from playing the Video_TS file shows as above post.
If I copy the VOB file and rename it into a mpg, I thought I could trick MC into using ROHQ, MadVR and yadif deinterlacing in ffdshow, and I certainly can, although the result is no better:
Here's the MadVR OSD:
So it seems that this disc fails with both h/w and software deinterlacing?
Here's the graph for ROHQ reading the mpg copy :

I think the problem may be with the tags in the file itself as Mediainfo states that this is a progressive file, but clearly isn't?

Bizarre? Can anyone explain what is going on here? Would a clever deinterlacer with 'pulldown' detection save the day?

Maybe it's a progressive DVD, where they mastered it from interlaced material and did a bad job?

How can I tell?
Is there a way of differentiating an interlaced clip which is incorrectly tagged with progressive, and a bad progressive clip mastered from badly deinterlaced material?
