Is there a way to accomplish this? I can download YouTube videos to my system in mp4s and play them in MC... but is there a way to extract the audio track from a Youtube video and turn it into an mp3?

did not work. i get an error when trying to convert a downloaded .mp4 video file to .mp3 audio.

If nothing else, you can use a tool like Audacity:

If the mp4 video file has a 2 channel AAC audio track you could create a copy of it and change the filename extension to .m4a. MC would see it as an m4a audio file and be able to convert it (at least this works for me).

This worked, thanks.

Sorry Steve, I didn't tested it
Indeed it generates an error.
Normally I use dbPoweramp, it converts the audio part about 3 times as fast.
The trick to rename it to m4a works indeed. Thanks Alex

You can use Options > Audio > Disk Writer to play a video and save the audio to disk as a WAV.
Then you can use Media Center to convert the WAV to another format if needed.
