Title: DVD playback defaults to 5.1 audio, not stereo
Post by: Mitchco on July 26, 2011, 09:19:18 pm
How do I set the default DVD playback to be stereo?

I have checked Options -> DSP and Output and it says 2 channel stereo.  Play's CD's great!

If the DVD happens to have a menu for setting the audio, then I can choose stereo.  However, if the DVD does not have that option, I cannot watch the movie on my stereo as the default seems to be 5.1 surround...

Many thanks for any assistance.

Pick '2 channels (stereo)' in DSP Studio > Output Format, and select 'JRSS v2.0 surround mixing'.

Then, use Red October Standard (in Options > Video) and the latest build of Media Center.

Any 5.1 or 7.1 content will get downmixed to 2.0 with these settings.

After listening for a day, with the above settings, I have a couple of questions.

1)  Is there anyway to configure the JRSS surround add-in?  Unfortunately, the voice is mixed pretty low compared to the rest of the audio and the sound effects are way too loud.

2)  Unless I am mistaken, most if not all DVD's have 2 channel sound encoded along with the 5.1.  If MC16 is configured for 2 channel playback, why does it not just use the stereo tracks provided on the DVD?

Many thanks for any assistance.
