i'm ripping CDs to FLAC and every now and then, after inserting a CD, it'll start to scan the new cd (working spinny thing) and lock up totally. windows ask me to kill it so i do and it goes away, but wont start again.
i go into task manager and its still there so end process and nothing happens. run taskmgr as admin and try again, nothing.
shutdowns and restarts take forever after this happens - MC is sitting there doing nothing cpu wise but its totally utterly dead and non responsive.
how do i stop this because its a major pain in the you know what.
edit: after 5-10 minutes MC will finally die and i can start it again, although it'll usually lock up again until i use windows explorer to explore the cd, then its fine

Windows, and hence programs such as MC, are at the mercy of the physical device and its driver. If the device hangs up and does not respond to an operation which is expected to succeed, this can cause the situation you're experiencing. Windows can't just kill the process because control is in the device driver and the process is awaiting its completion.
So this is hinting at a hardware issue.
Try troubleshooting by focusing on the hardware replacement: CD/DVD drive, cables, connections.
