Hello,
I can't install MC 16.0.176 on my old w2k Prof-Computer (SP4).
All updates are installed, directx9 too. ZoneAlarm etc. is not installed. I deleted the temp-files, but the MC160176.exe extracts and then I get an error-message in german language: Install.exe failed and has been closed. Please start the program again.
What do I need?
- additional components e.g. Net Framework?
- more space on the harddisk (I have a little system-partition with 34 GB, 2.5 GB used)
- a different CPU? The Mainboard is a VIA Epia ME 6000
Please excuse my poor english ;)
TIA

You shouldn't need anything special. I don't know what the problem is. Did you download it from our site? You might try downloading again.
-
Yes, I downloaded already several times from your site. I used Firefox and IE 6. The Download seemes to be complete (filesize 21.221.400)
-
I have no idea. Maybe try updating IE.
-
And check your system date.
-
Done - a few minutes in the past are corrected. A fresh download failes again - same error-message.
Do I need some special ;) hardware like mouse or keyboard? I've a touchscreen as input device and administrate the future music-server with vnc (port 5900). Are there any conflicts?

I'll go to reinstall w2k - then we'll see... 8)

I run MC16 on an ancient fujistu tablet running Windows 2000 SP4 with 196K of ram. It works fine. However during the install I do get an error message about no dxsetup.exe which then causes problems with MC16 in theater mode. The rest works fine however.

I'm reasonably certain it's your VIA CPU.
While these should in theory be identical to an AMD/ Intel of similar vintage, there have definitely been odd bugs with them in the past-

There are others out there, but the search doesn't like words of three letters :)

I think you are right. With the reinstalled w2k the same error-message. :(
-
Did you try updating DirectX from Microsoft?
-
Is this a VIA CPU? If so, I'm not sure if Media Center will work with it. I had a lot of problems (with everything) when I tried a VIA CPU about 8 years ago.

In my case, I get error messages even from trying to install directx downlaods directly from microsoft. Ancient hardware and minimal graphics chips on my ancient fuji tablet are too blame. Not jriver.
But however, again, MC16 for me runs and does what I need it to do on this particular tablet as long as I stay out of theater mode.
I use the tablet in a dance studio just for selecting songs and previously created playlists off my server.

You can ignore the directx installer error. I just installed fresh to a win2k sp4 container on virtualbox and it worked fine. I chose pixos as the skin.
-
Only FYI:
- My Via ME 6000 is an embedded board with a Via CPU (Linux says Samuel)
- The following link points to a little screeshot, which shows the error-message. You can also see the borderlines of the install-dialog. This border vanishes a few seconds later, the message-box remaines.

Possibly a random thought, but you might try creating a portable install on a licenced alternative machine & copying that over. If this is just an installer error, this may let you get past it :)

I'd say that's worth a try. Perhaps there is a problem with mmx? IIRC MC requires that.
