Title: TIF Photo Tags
Post by: sdgrizdan on October 21, 2011, 04:01:13 pm
I have 100s of .TIF photos that all have title/subject tags filled in Windows Explorer in Windows 7.

In Windows, these titles are visible under MyComputer->Photo-> Properties->Details  (under Title & Subject)

However, these tags are not visible when I look at the tags in MC16.

Please advise on how to see these tags in MC.

Thanks!

Make sure you have the latest MC16.

Then select a file and use Library Tools/Update Library from Tags.  Try one or two before you do very many.

I did w/ no result. When I click on the File Type link in Tags within MC to see the embedded tags, I don't see anything. However, Windows recognizes the tags when I look in Properties within Windows Explorer.

I tried a test.

I created a TIF picture from Microsoft Paint. In Windows 7, I right clicked the file, and changed the title and subject within the Properties->Detail section. I opened MC16 (latest version) and MC did NOT recognize the tags made from Windows Explorer.

Is this a bug?

Good:

I took a JPG file and tagged a title with Windows 7 Explorer. I loaded MC16 (latest version) and MC16 is able to read the XMP tags that Windows applied. MC16 reads the Title tag as a Caption field, which is OK. (i can easily copy fields once they are loaded into the MC library)

Here is the portion of the embedded title tag (viewed in MC16) that Windows applied to my JPG file. I tagged the title "Blurry Sunset":

XMP Tags:
[Scheme = http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/]
(dc)
title :
title[1] : Blurry Sunset
title[1]/?xml:lang : x-default
description :
description[1] : Blurry Sunset
description[1]/?xml:lang : x-default

Bad:

However, when I repeat the same exact steps using a .TIF or .TIFF file, MC16 cannot read the title tags applied by Windows 7.

Can anyone else repeat/confirm this issue?

My problem is that I obtained hundreds of TIF family photos that were tagged by Windows with long captions of each photo.

Thanks!

I ran a program that can analyze all metadata embedded in a picture, called MetaEditor.

Each of my TIF photo files have metadata containing the descriptions, but they are not readable by Media Center. They are, however, read by other software, including MetaEditor, Photoshop and Windows 7 Explorer.

The tags are:

EXIF:

Tag: 270
Name: Image.ImageDescription
Type: String
Value: "this is my description that is not read by MC"

(TIFF tag 270, 0x10E. Description of the image. Note: This property is stored in XMP as dc:description.)

IPTC:

Tag: 2:120
Name: Caption
Type: String
Value: "this is my description that is not read by MC"

XMP:

Tag: dc:description
Name: dc:description
Type: String
Value: "this is my description that is not read by MC"
