I'm a long-time Media Center user (since maybe version 10 or so?) and love it to death. I even run a parallels virtual machine on my MAC just to have it running.
Anyway... I've had to install and reinstall MC many times, and every time I do so, I have to get a new license file from JRiver just to get it up and running. Not a huge deal, but I'm wondering: if I have a setup EXE and a legitimate serial number, shouldn't I be able to just install the software? You know, in case I'm on a proverbial desert island with no internet?
A similar problem is that MC always seems to "lock me out" when updates are available, almost like it's a beta that's expired... I then have to download a new version just to get up and running again...
Is there a way to address both of these issues?
-
Thanks for your business. When you restore, you receive an Install Key that is good for 14 days. After that, you need to do a restore again. This is explained in the Purchase section above.
Sometimes we "force" an update. We don't do it unless it's very important.
-
So is there really no way to use the software without either a) the internet or b) jriver?
-
Everything would still work, but you couldn't install on a new machine. Neither the Internet nor JRiver are going anywhere soon.
-
This made me laugh...
I use MC basically every day on a desert island.
Mount Desert Island (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=mount+desert+island&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x4cae95dbf4c1a0e5:0xfddc6ecbad64a551,Mt+Desert+Island&gl=us&ei=GUO8TujwIeTY0QHmrdDiCQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=3&ved=0CDsQ8gEwAg), to be exact.

You know, I hope so, and I wish you the best and continued success. But with the way the global economy is today, you should consider making it possible for people to continue to use your software even if your company is no longer around. I for one will continue using MC long into the future. It really has no competition as far as I'm concerned.

If your PC running MC doesn't have an internet connection, MC won't check for updates.
If your PC is connected to the internet and you don't want MC to check for updates automatically, you can turn off that feature.
I have MC 12 and MC 15 installed on one PC. They have run without updates or re-installation for many months. No reason you can't do this with MC 16,17 ...

For the present, they are doing a good job of staying in business.

Would a "portable install" with updates turned off be essentially what I'm talking about?

I've often thought about this too!

No.

Good point. Global economic meltdown is nothing compared to the loss of MC! JRiver should hedge by marketing a hand-powered computer with an internet-less version of MC installed. In the new world order, it may be better currency than toilet paper... ;D

Hah!! ;D
More seriously, an easier solution would just be for Jim to swear upon everything that is good and holy that if JRiver is about to go under (ie. he puts it in his Will), that they will send out a restore key to all users in good standing with a current license that never expires.
Problem solved.

I prefer the solution where you keep sending money and we keep writing code.

I'm down with that. ;)

Yeah... I can just see it as a selling point on MC's website.
"In the event of our company going tits up, our licensing process allows you to continue to install the program long after we have filed for bankruptcy."

Not sure if you were serious, but...
Because that is just the kind of PR you want to advertise: We May Go Tits Up.

You mean like almost all of the other software I've ever purchased?
I think most people would assume they could use the software w/o JRiver. Guess they'd find out otherwise, but by then who really cares, right? :P

For the record, this does NOT include:
Windows 7
Windows Vista
Any Adobe Creative Suite product since CS1
(and to include a little-guy example)
SyncBack SE

as sarcastic as possible my friend.

Think I've gotten my answer: no.
Like I said, I wish this company the best, but consider what I'm saying. Or not.
BTW, changing the main subject title to something other than what I originally posted: real classy.

Sorry.... My filter seems to be broken today. ;)

My fault. Sorry if it bothers you.
I wish you a long and happy life.

More to a practical concern, remeber to try to run a video before you go on the road to a place without internt, i got "burned" by that once, I went on a trip, loaded the laptop with some movies, but the red-october-filters wasn't installed. If you really plan on going to a place with no internet for an extended period.

;D ;D
this is funny
best wishes to all
