Post by: stealer on November 12, 2011, 02:23:16 am
Hi,

my .ape & .wv files have missing album art & song name.
The song name show as ??. for foreign language

I had been using Mp3tag ver2.49 to perfrom tagging all my audio files.
Been searching the forum and not able to find any helpful information.

Since MC16 is .ape & .wv friendly, was wondering did I missed something....

Anyone??

maybe I should re-subject to "Album art not showing up in .ape & .wav format, foreign song name can not be identifed"

Hoping someone one can help fix this with just a change in some config/setting, which I have been looking at..

you see, if i take this file and use dbPoweramp and convert them to flac..

all the tagged information will appeared without me adding any more input..

So i believe that I had miss out something which i just can't find the fix...

woh!!!!    :o

sounded like this is a problem with no fix, unless convert all the ape & wv files to flac.

All users

Do you really convert your ape or wv files to flac or do the tagging in MC???

See this re: WAV files:

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/WAV_%26_AIFF_Tagging

Suggest converting to a tag-able lossless format such as FLAC.

What option is set for your Cover Art location in Options?

Hi MrC

thank for the link however I am not referring to tagging WAV or AIFF files.

I am referring to the ape (monkeys audio) and wv (wavpack).
these are the 2 types of files that I am having trouble with..
my only solution is to convert them into flac files..
I am trying to minimise the additional work since JR MC is capable of supporting these files
But I am surprise that JR is unable to read the tag since both of these format are "taggable"

APE fully supports cover art in MC.  Probably wavepack too.

As MrC asked, what options do you have set for cover art?

JimH / MrC

I  put Cover Art in the same location as the folder.
i Usually keep them there after using Mp3tag, however I always tag the ape/wv file with Mp3tag.

btw i dont tag using MC...

Since you posted this question..
It got me thinking...

Does that meant only ape & wv file that are tag with MC can view the cover art???
file tagged using Mp3tag cannot view their cover art???

What are the names of the cover art?

Can you also show a tag dump of one of the problematic files from within MC:

See here for how to dump the tags: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=59513.msg430491#msg430491 (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=59513.msg430491#msg430491)

Sorry for the late response..
I was away on a holiday

the name of the cover art is usually the name of the folder + generes + date
eg Tom Jones - Greatest Hits    Pop 2003 (there is about 4 spaces between Hits and Pop)

I usually put the cover art in the folder where the songs are
however, like I said i tagged all the songs using Mp3tag and not with MC

picture - no cover art after tagging with Mp3tag
(http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o177/my9386/tagdumpcoverart.jpg)

cover art will appeared if i convert the ape to flac format...

Also I would like to make it clear that it is not missing song name..
all the name are replaced by ??  ??
this happens on ape /wv files if the name are foreign like Chinese characters
again if I convert it to flac..
all the text will appear without problem..

Would you be able to send me one affected track?  I'll take a look, and then delete it when I'm done.

Let's start with the one missing cover art.  I'll send you a private message.

I can confirm that stealer's .ape file contains cover art which is displayed by mp3tag, but not by MC.

stealer,

Something is odd in your screenshot. It shows that the tag format is ID3v1. It is not recommended (and possibly not even supported in MC) to use ID3 tags in Monkey's Audio or WavPack files. The recommended and supported tag format is APE v.2 (the old, more limited, APE v.1 would probably also be readable, but there is no reason to use the very old programs that do not support APE v.2). AFAIK, Mp3tag uses always the APE v.2 format when it tags Monkey's Audio or WavPack files.

As a quick test I created a short, almost silent, audio sample with an audio editor and converted it to tagless APE and WV files. Then I tagged the resulting files with Mp3tag 2.94a, including a small embedded cover art image. The tags show up perfectly fine in MC16 and MC17. In case you would like to try my test files, they are in the attached zip package.

I checked the tagging options in Mp3tag. Apparently it is possible to enable ID3v1 tag writing for the APE, WV and Musepack formats (which are designed to use APE tags), but you really should disable that option.

I attached four screenshots:
1. The APE tagging options in Mp3tag (ID3v1 writing disabled)
2. A WavPack file with APEv2 tags in MC.
3. A Monkey's Audio file with APEv2 tags in MC.
4. A Monkey's Audio file with ID3v1 and APEv2 tags in MC. (Apparently ID3v1.1 has preference when the tags are read. ID3v1.1 supports only a few basic fields, its character set is limited and it does not support embedded cover art.)

Thanks Alex.  His description is good.

Monkey's Audio (APE) files should be tagged with APE tags (v2).

The reference APE code also supports reading ID3v1.1 tags, although I can't think why anyone would use these any longer.

It is not supported to put _both_ types of tags on an APE file.  In this case, the reference code will simply use whatever tag is last.
