Tom Murphy writes a brilliant blog called "Do the Math"  in which he applies math and physics to help us understand what is and is not possible. 

The 2 main challenges for alternate energy are density and scale. In this article Tom addresses the challenge of storing energy at the scale necessary to maintain our current lifestyle.

A must read in my opinion.
