I'd love the option of a fade in/out pause.

Good idea.

I would like to rewrite the fadeout on stop for v17 so it goes through the audio engine instead of the volume.  Using the same system on pause would be an easy addition once that's done.

Would this prevent MC from freezing on stop with fade?! If it does it would solve my "favorite" longtime bug (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=21334.0) :) I would love MC even more!

No.

Stop is not asynchronous.  This isn't a bug, it's just how it works.
