I have a dual screen setup, with a vga cable to a monitor and hdmi to a projector. The monitor does not have 1920x1080x24 mode, the projector does. Projector desktop and monitor viewing mode 60Hz for computer use, with film modes 23.796 and 24 to be shown as 1920x1080x32x23 on the pj. Every time the projector is switched off, the film viewing modes are reset to "desktop setting". In practice this means I need to change display settings every time I want to watch a movie.
Is there any way MC can be configured not to forget these settings?

If you use madVR, then you can use its own refresh changer and configure projector and monitor...

Does the hdmi connection go directly to the projector or via some kind of avr?
Displays, projectors and alike sends a edid token to explain its capabilities and when your projector is connected through an avr and not turned on, the avr sends its own edid, not the one from the projector. Then the pc reconfigures your setup. Quite annoying.

No avr, hdmi directly into pj. And it is MC that looses its video configuration. There is no mismatch between htpc and pj.
I will look into madVR also, to see if that is a way around.

It seems simply to be so that MC detects the possible monitor/pj resolutions and refresh rates. If I send video signal to my monitor, the "impossible" video settings (1080p24) is replaced by "desktop settings". I can understand that trying to play back 1080p24 on my monitor would cause a black screen, but it would really be convenient to force MC to remember the settings. I usually do not watch movies on my 19" monitor (obviously), but I frequently (always) use it between two movies.

Try the EDID Override thread on Avsforum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1091403).
I had a similar issue, but it was my amp that kept 'forgetting' that it could do 24p. This meant that MC defaulted to 'desktop settings' when it forgot. Installing an inf file for your projector might make the setting stick. It may not work because you turn the pj off, whereas my problem was the amp was always on, but reporting the wrong EDID.

I have the same problem at home.
I'd like to switch it so that display settings are zone specific.
It also shouldn't revert if it fails to load a refresh rate, for the reasons you've listed.
If this doesn't happen in the next two weeks, please bump this thread.
Thanks.

Thanks a lot for looking into this. I'll make sure to bump into the thread if nothing happens!

I think this will be all better in build 17.0.40 (or newer), including keeping settings and making the settings zone-specific.
Check back later this week or early next week.
Thanks.

17.0.40 (11/21/2011)
14. Changed: Display changing settings in Options > Video are now zone-specific (may require manually reconfiguring applicable video options).
I tested this, and it works exactly as i hoped for, thanks a lot!
It allows me to open Display Settings on my RGB monitor without losing its PJ settings. It also allows playback of 24Hz material on the 60Hz monitor without losing settings. Best of all - when firing up my 1080p24 PJ, it remembers the auto-switching to 1920x1080x24 even if I did all those things in between. Great :-)
