I initially posted this on the MC16 forum, but didn't get a response. I have since upgraded to MC17, and am still having the same issue. I'd be happy to help investigate or test a fix on 17 first if that's easier.
Versions affected:
16.0.181
17.0.38
Default music location:
\\server\musicarchive\wma_lossless
Auto-import locations:
\\server\musicarchive\beatport
\\server\musicarchive\hdtracks
\\server\musicarchive\other shops
\\server\musicarchive\purchased
\\server\musicarchive\wma_lossless
Portable location - sync "All Music" playlist into MP3
\\server\music\mp3
The first sync - everything completes quickly, and there are no duplicates on the share.
Next, I rip some CD's, they show up in my library, but are not "In Queue" for the portable. I click "recheck Sync", and the following happens:
Some albums are listed as "duplicate" at the top of a long list
The new albums are listed as "in queue" next
Existing albums are listed as "in queue" as well. This is the bug.
If I narrow this further and select an artist in the left pane, you can see the same album listed both as "Duplicate" and as "In Queue".
If I sync at this point, most or all of my collection will be duplicated. This wastes disk space and confuses other apps watching the mp3 folder such as Sonos and Firefly media server.
Here's an example of an album that's reported both as duplicate, and also as "In Queue"

I've experienced the same problem for many iterations. Switching to MSC mode from MTP mode seems to relieve the issue (on my Sansa Clip, Sony Walkman NWZ series and Chocolate Touch phone).
-
This used to work reliably for me, but I went a long time without upgrading. Unfortunately MTP mode isn't an option for me since my "handheld" devices are all SD cards or network shares.
I think this worked on MC14 or 15, but I don't remember 100% for sure. I skipped a few versions and bought 16 recently, then 17.

Is there any format conversion occurring (like APE to MP3)? Does changing it make a difference?
Are you syncing Media Type > All Audio or a playlist named 'All Music'? Does using a simple playlist also show the issue?
Thanks.
-
Sorry, I'm using "Media Type > All Audio", not "All Music". I'm converting from WMA lossless to MP3.
Unfortunately I can't try the "All Audio" sync without compression. I don't have sufficient disk space to duplicate all the WMA lossless files on the file server.
Next, I'll try a smaller playlist next and report back tonight.

Second test: same transcoding settings, but syncing 1 playlist
I created the same settings, and a new empty playlist. I added 4 albums, then clicked sync.
First sync - everything pulled from transcoding cache, synced 4 albums really quick
Added another album to the playlist
Second sync - resynced everything creating duplicates, along with new album
Third test: sync 1 playlist, but "Mode: Never convert"
Playlist used - same as second test
First sync - copied everything correctly
Added another album to playlist
Clicked "recheck sync"
Now everything is "in queue" again.
Click sync - now I have dupes
-
Thanks for the tests.
It seems like you've ruled out the sync mode and conversion.
Would you try making a virtual device on a local drive (instead of a UNC drive) just to see if the issue could be related to UNC?
-
It is something about creating a virtual device with a UNC path. I've reproduced some strange stuff here.
I'll follow-up once I know more.
-
In a coming build of v17:
Fixed: Creating a virtual handheld device that pointed to a UNC path did not work nicely.
Thanks for all your help getting to the bottom of it.
-
Hmm, It looks like the problem doesn't reproduce on a local drive.
Are there any specific file operations that you're looking for? I could try to capture a process monitor trace to see what file access is done, but I expect that it will be huge.
-
Sorry if I was cryptic in the post above, but this problem should be fixed thanks to your help.
Please install the latest build of 17 from the top of this board.
If you don't mind, follow-up in this thread just to confirm it's working for you.
Thanks.

Sorry, I must not have refreshed before my last post. I updated to 10.0.46, and it's sort of working. It resolved the Duplicate / In Queue / On Device status correctly and didn't create duplicates.
However, one of the encoding processes or something crashed with this dialog. One of the songs says "Converting...", but has no %. The overall sync progress is also stuck at "Less than 1 minute." All the others have completed. I have concurrent encoding set to 4 processes, and it's the 4th song in the queue that is stuck. I don't think that's a coincidence.
Here's a dialog that came up, and Windows is asking me which postmortem debugger to use on Media Center 17.exe. I have hit a few issues with MC17 so far where transcoding sometimes crashes the app. Do you need a full dump of the process the next time I hit it? If so, PM me your email address and I can get it to you.
