Title: MC and dish ViP722 on same external hard drive

Is this possible? What external hard drive should I buy? Shopping online is a morass of conflicting information

Not going to happen.  The ViP unit will format the HD with its own file system, destroying anything you place on it.

Perhaps you have other goals here?
