Title: Error -- No tag information on CD

I'm a newbie to this forum, so please bear with me.  I downloaded MC Ver 17 today on a Dell Studio Hybrid running 64-bit Windows 7 and cannot get the program to display the tag information on any cd I load.  I have checked "Allow automatic CD lookup / submission" in Options.  Looking at similar posts for earlier versions, I checked for new drivers to the cd/dvd drive, but I have the latest.  Out of curiosity, I downloaded iTunes and it displays tag information, as does Windows Media Player. 

I would really like to use MC.  Is there a fix for this problem?

Welcome.  There is usually no information on the CD.  MC will do a lookup online.  Maybe your firewall is blocking access.

Thanks.  That helps explain why the other programs can access the tag info.  I'm running Microsoft's free firewall and security programs and I've granted JR Media Center access thru the firewall.  Should I look to grant access to other JR programs?  Also, I have Spybot running.  I could do without Spybot, which I've read in other posts to cause registry issues.  If uninstalling that program might help, then can you suggest what would be the follow-up with MC?

Which MS programs are you running?

Ditch Spybot - it has run its course.

Try obtaining the CD information again via Update from Online Database (from Drives & Devices, either via the button at the top or via right-clicking the drive/disc and using the pulldown menu)

Thanks again for staying with me.  Per your last reply, I uninstalled Spybot.  I also turned off the firewall in MS Security Essentials (the only anti-malware program I'm running) and turned off Explorer's pop-up blocker (I'm probably stretching here).  Still no album or track info.  All I get when I select Update from Online Database is a separate, smaller window showing the album and tracks as "unknown".

I don't know if this is meaningful, but I re-set the firewall's rules to Enable all inbound Public and Domain traffic for MC 17.  I don't see MC 17 in the list of programs for outbound rules, if that's any help.  Is there a way to specify the URL of YADB (what is it, BTW?) so that Windows allows traffic to/from that site?  Is there a way to specify some other source than YADB as the default album info lookup?

By default, Windows Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials will allow MC to do its job.  And so will configurations of firewalls, which allow outbound traffic, and their related responses to return (this is what a stateful, packet inspecting firewall does).

The requests are simple web requests:

So, if you can browse the web, your firewall is configured correctly.  Try entering the first URL posted above into a browser (or just click it).  What do you get back?

Ok, confirmed then that your firewall is allowing the traffic in and out.

Now you need to see if MC's network traffic is being blocked, from some security software change you may have made.

If you can install Wireshark, I'll explain how to run it, and what to look for.

What CDs are you trying?  Are they rare or obscure?

Could you try a really common CD?  I'm trying to figure out if we have a network issue or a rare-CD-not-found issue.

I'm trying to rip Bryan Adams "So Far So Good" and, thinking that it might have been too old/obscure, I've tried Adele's "Adele 21".

I'm installing Wireshark now.

I would expect both of those CDs to match (assuming they're retail CDs and not home-burned).

I think Fiddler would be easier to use if you want to watch the lookup:

Run Fiddler.

While it's running, do Lookup CD Information from inside Media Center.

You should see the calls inside Fiddler.

Examine the request and response.  What do you see?

You only care about those to www.yadb.com (or possibly to freedb after that), as I've shown.

Can you right-click the column for each entry to www.yadb.com and select Copy > Full Summary (or Ctrl-C) and paste those for any YADB and FreeDB entries?

Matt - it occurs to me this problem appears periodically for various users.  It might be helpful to have a test lookup command that sends two probs - one for a disc that is guaranteed to be non-existent so that both YADB and FreeDB look ups return fail results, and one that always should succeed.  The results could then be summarized and help could be directed to a wiki article for additional debug.

Guys --

I don't mean to try your patience, but I guess I was too optimistic about how quick a fix we could do and so started this communication too close to the time I have to leave on a trip.  I'll try posting again, but it may be in a few days.  I'm a big fan of JR's support and understand that there's too much variability in the Windows environment to expect things will always go without a hitch.  It's surprising how seldom problems arise, actually.

This is a good idea.

Just a general network test, and YADB lookup test may come in handy for diagnosing problems like these, and any we get in the future with the new cloud metadata lookup stuff for video.  You could stash it under the Help menu.

I tried a CD that is not present in the databases.

- Zip package: The above two "sessions" exported from Fiddler in the HTTPArchive v.1.1 format. The unzipped ".har" file can be imported to Fiddler and "reissued" (File > Import Sessions...  &  select > right-click > Replay > Reissue Requests...)

It might be worth pointing out that the TextView portion shows the lookup failures.
