Title: Metadata for previously imported movies and TV series
Post by: Hendrik on January 20, 2012, 10:00:03 am
Excuse my ignorance for not reading everything, but is there a way yet to run it on a already imported library?
Running it on new files is all fine, but the thousands of episodes i already have also want some data. :)

No, not really.  You'd have to remove the files from the Library and then remove them from the Deleted Items "special database" as well, then re-import them.

We need a batch lookup mechanism in the manual Get Info search dialog.

Delete the files, then re-import the directory they are in, first checking the option to import previously deleted files.

I guess thats a way, however rather annoying considering i had to fix some of the carnac choices (mostly due to bad file naming) afterwards.

A batch running feature on a number of selected files or a whole library sub-tree would be an awesome addition.

A related question - does the look-up work only on auto-import? Can I select a bunch of files in Windows, right click and use import in Media Center from the contextual menu to have Carnac and metadata lookup do their thing?

The new auto-import option 'Get movie & TV info' runs against the entire library.

It looks up metadata for files matching the following criteria:

1) The file is a movie or TV show (based on media sub type)
2) A lookup for the file hasn't been automatically performed in the last year
3) The file does not already have metadata (defined as a filled description, actors, or director for movies / filled description or actors for TV shows)
4) For TV shows, the file must have a valid season and episode number

Previously I described some of the complexities with allowing the tool to be run manually on a batch of files, but I'll try to work through them and add the feature.

Next build:
NEW: 'Get Movie & TV Info' can be run on any number of files (when processing more than one file, automatic lookup is used instead of showing the lookup dialog).

Fantastic news!

Wow - This is great!!!

I have a large library of files imported from SageTV. I previously did manual lookups of info for movies but it was too time consuming of a process. So this morning I ran the automatic process on my whole library and am very pleased with the results. Not perfect but darn good. A LOT of information that we previously didn't have.

For those of you not sure how to do this on existing libraries here's what I did:

1. Tools/Import.

2. Check Configure Auto Import and click on Next.

3. Be sure the folders where your videos show are correct. If not make them so here.

4. Check Build Thumbnails, Get Cover Art and Get Movie & TV Info then Finish.

5. MC will then search through all files in the listed folders and will add metadata per these rules:

1) The file is a movie or TV show (based on media sub type)
2) A lookup for the file hasn't been automatically performed in the last year
3) The file does not already have metadata (defined as a filled description, actors, or director for movies / filled description or actors for TV shows)
4) For TV shows, the file must have a valid season and episode number

6. The process may take awhile because it's going to the Internet for each Movie/Show that it needs data for. But it works in the background so you can do other things.

In the future, as long as your import folders are the same as what's configured you just do Tools/Import then Run Auto Import Now.

All very simple and it seems to work very well.

Thanks a lot JRiver and Team for a great improvement to an already wonderful program.

Isn't it? :) I almost felt penalised for being a long time user of MC, in that all these new features are available now. They are most conveniently applied by brand new users, rather than those of us who already have been getting by with our poorly tagged video libraries in MC for a few years.
