I was using a trial version of MC 16. A few days before the trail period expired I had to totally reformat the computer due to a few bugs. When I got the operating system reinstalled and everything running I thought I would just install MC 17 as a Few days earlier a message came out saying it was now stable. So I installed it and then went to the "help" section and purchased it. I received the email with my key, but MC 17 when I fire it up says it is a "Trial Copy" What did I do wrong? ?

Nothing wrong, you just need to install the key.
If you have the .mjr file, say on your desktop, just drop it onto Media Center 17.

No .mjr file; where would I find this? The purchase confirmation e-mail came with a registration code but no file.
-
It should be an attachment in your email.

If this doesn't help solve the issue, the JRiver folks are sure to help you out.

Firefox changes the extension from mjr to exe, which prevents the file (Install Key) from working.
Use IE to restore.
