Title: DSP studio will not open when using Splashtop [Splashtop problem]
Post by: OmarL on January 27, 2012, 10:56:12 am
Hello All,

New to the forum, looking forward to learning more about MC17. I've only been using JRiver for a few months so bear with me if I seem unfamiliar.

I use MC17 on a dedicated music server which is just a Lenovo laptop, W7 64 bit, i5 processor. Files (many!) are on an OWC Mercury Elite Pro external drive connected via eSATA. They are 99% flac, a few mp3 sprinkled in. Signal is output via USB to a Berkeley Alpha USB converter. I also have JPlay for JRiver installed but the following issue is not related as it occurred prior to JPlay.

My main issue here is with the DSP studio not opening. If I click on DSP, all I get is a shadow in the Windows lower task bar but the studio will not open. Any idea what would cause this?

Thanks!

Welcome.

Try this:
1) Close Media Center
2) Run regedit.exe
3) Go to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center 17\Properties
4) Delete this value:
Window Placement - DSP Studio
5) Run Media Center and try again

Let us know how you fare.

I got all the way to step 4 but there is no option "Window Placement-DSP Studio". There is SPLIT WINDOW, VIEWS, MUI, KEYWORD, CONFIRM

I can't seem to figure this one out.

This isn't a problem we see.  So something special is going on.  Pop up blocker?

Download from our site.  Reboot and reinstall MC.

Uninstall jplay just to be sure.

Look at the list of values on the right once you navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center 17\Properties.

One of the values on the right should be "Window Placement - DSP Studio", which you should delete.

Matt...see above post, that value is not present.

Jim...uninstall MC17 first or just download again and install?

You don't have to uninstall.

Matt...see above post, that value is not present.

I think you might be looking for the value in the tree on the left.

Once you get to the key, you need to look on the right (a list) for the value.

Ok Matt, you were correct and I found it, deleted the value, restarted MC17 but same issue. I did get it to open earlier. The shadow stayed in my task bar for about five minutes and then it opened.

Do you use a pop up blocker?

I was just looking at that Jim. I use Chrome and there is one, can't find it at the moment...I will, it's there somewhere! I don't think that's it though. Typically you see a little icon at the far right of the address/search bar when there is a block, not a shadow on the lower task bar as this appears. I'm viewing my server on another machine via Splashtop so I'll check that browser too just in case....

Would you be willing to try a full uninstall, reboot, and reinstall of the latest?

I'm stumped as to what might be happening.

Ok...disabled popup block on both machines, no go.

Yes, I can do full uninstall/reinstall...damnit.

This just smells like a problem caused by some "security" software.  The pop up blocker is a good candidate.  Sometimes disabling a program isn't enough.  Uninstalling may be necessary.

Think about what you've changed recently.

Or did you ever install any 3rd party DSP plugins, like maybe a VST plugin?

Maybe some particular 3rd party DSP causes trouble?

Jim I get your line of thinking and it makes sense but nothing's really changed and this is a problem from jump with JRiver. I had the issue with MC16 and it did not correct when I updated to 17. I've only been a user for roughly 3 months...give or take.

The only security I use is Msft Security Essentials on my laptop, Spybot Search and Destroy for an occasional scan. I don't have either on my server...nada. Chrome has some malware/phishing warning stuff but doubt that is even close to seeing MC.

No other DSP stuff, that machine is pretty bare. JPlay but this was an issue before I ever heard of JPlay.

The only thing I have installed on my server is a driver for my Berkeley Alpha USB converter but that should not be an issue, Splashtop, MC17 and JPlay. Those are the only changes I have made other than removing basic junk.

Do you see an empty dsp window or no window at all?
I see the empty dsp window with splashtop sometimes. So your issue might be related to splashtop also. Do you let it resize the desktop or do you use the original size?

Are you trying to run this through Splashtop?  If so, try it on the PC.

Ahhhhhhhhhh! Empty window...like my skull. I have to check but think I use original size.

Ha! Ok, I disconnect from my laptop and DSP opens right up on my server. I guess you just cannot control it remotely with Splashtop for some reason. Never even thought of this.

Thanks much guys. I know it seems like a simple issue but it was bugging me, more that I couldn't figure it out. Now I can mess around and see how this upsampling sounds!

These empty windows problems can occur w/remote desktop software and the shortcuts they take to render content.  Sometimes you need to disable certain features such as Alpha-blending, or enable polling (don't recall the exact settings).  I've seen this in several VNC implementations, with a couple of different programs.
