Love how simple it is to create ringtones from within MC17.
With that being said, I think some enhancements could be made. Is there any reason why we can only create 30 second duration clips? Or why we can only loop up to 7.5 seconds? If for instance I have a 21 second segment I wanted to play, it'd be nice to be able to choose just that. Or have the 21 seconds play and loop.
Also, when I am in the ringtone maker, if I change the starting point of the ringtone, it automatically starts previewing it which is pretty annoying and undesired behavior. Another undesired behavior is that the output directory is not saved. It always defaults back to a directory that I don't want it to save to. It would be nice to remember the directory I put my ringtones in.
Another issue I have is I occasionally get an error that says "There was a problem creating the ringtone. Operation has been cancelled"
Also, is it possible to output the ringtones as .m4r files?

bump, anyone?

You could use MC's Media Editor to modify the ringtone once you've made it. You could put the 21 seconds together with a copy of it, then shorten it to 30 seconds, for instance.

I'm having no luck creating ringtones. No matter what I do I get the "There was a problem creating ringtone." error.

I have MC v16. I have never gotten the ringtone creator to work. It always just says "There was a problem creating the ringtone. The operation was cancelled." I feel cheated cuz this function seems like such a useful and fun feature. >:(

The ringtone issue should be fixed in the latest build:
17.0.155 (5/16/2012)
Fixed: Things that saved files to the desktop (new logging dialog, ringtone creation, etc.) could fail under UAC because they used the shared desktop folder instead of the user's desktop folder.

*** UPDATE***
Here is what i did to solve my problem after Matt that that MC was
using the shared desktop folder rather than the user desktop.
go to c:\user\public
open Folder options.view and under Hidden files and folders,
check Show hidden file, folders, and drives
[this will allow you to see the Public Desktop folder which was hidden]
Apply the changes and exit folder options.
in explorer, open c:\users\public\... you will now see the Public Desktop
go to Public Desktop and right-click for properties
change to the "Security" tab and you will see all users authorized to make
changes to the Public Desktop.
Find your ID and press "Edit".. Add "Full Control for your ID"
Apply the changes and exit
You can go back to the Public folder and rehide the desktop folder for safety sake.
I did the above and MC ringtone function worked like a charm!
;D

Dammit, thought I'd look at that, having never noticed it before
It's a nice 'bonus' that it wipes your playing now queue clear.......
