Title: Help - I See No Subtitles on Blu-rays
Post by: gcoupe on February 07, 2012, 10:11:28 am
I'm currently trying out MC17 after finally losing patience with Arcsoft's TMT5 (too many problems).

I have my Blu-rays ripped as ISO files (with AnyDVD HD) on my WHS 2011 server, and have got them imported into MC's Library. They play back beautifully (no juddering or freezing, as TMT5 does). However, I'm not able to select any of the Subtitles that I know are present on the Blu-Rays. When I playback DVDs, (ripped to Video_TS folders), I am able to select Subtitles.

Is this expected behaviour, or am I missing something?

Thanks

Blu-ray subtitles (PGS) are fully supported by the subtitle engine.

What do you see in the right-click 'Subtitles' menu when playing?

I see "n/a"

I see "n/a"

That means the splitter doesn't think there are subtitles.  Is it possible it's correct?

What happens if you try a Blu-ray as a BDMV folder instead of packaged into an ISO?  I don't have personal experience with ISO, and our recommendation is the BDMV folder-style rip.

Well - I know that the Blu-rays I've tried do have subtitles.

I've just put a Blu-ray into a BD drive and used MC17 to play it from there. Same thing, subtitles are "n/a". The disc is the Dutch version of Avatar, which has three soundtrack versions (English, French, and German) and four subtitle languages (Dutch, English, French, and German).

Something isn't working, I feel...

Just to be sure, could you make sure you're on the latest version of Media Center:

I just tested a disc in the drive and PGS subtitles are working for me.

Ahem - I've just tried another Blu-ray in the drive: This time, it was the English version of Alice in Wonderland. And this time, I am seeing subtitles...

This is very bizarre, because I know that I've played Avatar in TMT3 and shown Dutch subtitles for my Dutch friends...

Oh - I'm on .82 version of MC17

There is a known issue in LAV Splitter that some Blu-rays are mastered rather badly so that the subtitles are not detected properly.

I can try to get it fixed, but i don't think i have a disc affected by this, making it harder to solve.

If there's a disc available on Amazon that has this problem, we'd be happy to order it and have it delivered to you nevcairiel.

Just let us know.

OK, thanks folks for your help. Just my luck to pick a badly mastered Blu-ray to check out MC17 with... I've been checking some of the rest of my collection, and so far they are all showing subtitles as present.  If I find more that present the problem, I'll let you know.

The only disc i know of to actually have that issue are some releases of Avatar. Mine is fine though, so really can't say which to get.
It was reported before on an Avatar disc, but never on anything else. :)

@gcoupe:
Whats the name of the disc? I mean the volume name that Explorer for example shows on the drive overview. Should be something like RED_BIRD with a  postfix, or so. The exact name can help determine which release it is. :)

I know this thread is somewhat old, but just wanted to let you know that LAV 0.49 (just released) should now be able to detect the subtitles on this disc.
